Next time you hear unrecognizable noise instead of a Metallica song, know that it IS the song. It is just encoded so that you do not SHARE it with your brain.
I can imagine a smartass DVD player talks to a not-that-stupid-either disc:
Player: Yo, man, show me what you've got in there... Disc: Dude, you look pretty ugly.. You look like... like... like you are from Japan or something Player (quickly taking off samurai disguise): What ? What is that jyapen anyway ? How do you spell that ? Disc: Hold on right there ! I've seen you taking that japanese thing off ! I know you... Player (hiding his little penguin statue): You better play that movie, bro.. Disc: No movie for you, you pirate-hacker-linux-based-penguin-powered-bastard ! I'm not even talking to you anymore !
Message on the screen: "Disc was rejected due to a region conflict. Talk to your local distributor."
P.S. No offence against Japan:) The dvd player just wanted to see that anime piece, you know:)
if you want to pay the artist more, you are free to come up with a business plan that pays them more
Do you honestly believe music industry will allow anyone to take over distribution channels ? I dont think so. Even if you come up with a business model and RIAA says "It's cool, let's do it", they'll make sure they have a big piece of the pie. So, you are back to your original at least pays the artists something
My point is that either music industry should adapt (not likely IMHO) or die.

RIAA CEO Speaks

Right after I started reading the article I saw a statement: We aren't against online music; we're leading the way
I'm sorry, Mrs. Rosen, what way are you leading ? "Online music distribution" way ? I'm still not able to download songs by most mainstream bands legally. The only lead we can see is Napster and such.
You seem to be comparing Windows to Solaris.
And the guy is talking about desktop OS, not
a high-end server (unless you're running Quicken on one of the high-traffic web servers).
This comparison doesn't seem logical to me, sorry.
(Again, unless you're talking about NT or 2000 Advanced Server or something)
I wonder if feds INTENTIONALY picked universities knowing they would reject....
Feds: Yo, guys, check _this_ out.
MIT: We're not _that_ stupid ! We are not a rubber stamp factory, you know.... We teach people.
Feds: Mmmmkay, thank you for your _cooperation_:)
> At what point does he or anybody else not need more money?
Lets rephrase the question.
"At what point do you not need more money ?".
It's up to YOU. And nobody has the right to judge neiter Stephen King nor anybody else as far as "how much money does one need" question goes. We are not in the communist society:) (sorry if i'm misusing term "communist society" here).
But I totally agree that he could give some novels away for free without hurting himself.
I'm not flaming here. I'm just saying that there is a different issue, not the amount of money one "needs".
It's my own opinion. Don't agree if you dont like it:)
I'd say they use public/private key pair, just like PGP does. You encode a message with public key and decode it with private key. So the server should populate one's public key to whomever wants to send a message to that guy. It can even be built around PGP....
This guy just read/. regularly and noticed that every 18 month there is a new article about CPU's that are 2 times more powerful than those in previous one....

I'll vote for someone who knows ISA from PCI.
:)
And we all will end up in a country that eats mostly pizza and drinks only Mountain Dew

I just talked to your boss on the phone... He said the same thing about your work.
Or I just didn't get your joke
