    3) My point? That I didn't need your opinion. And you obviously don't need mine.

Obviously, we're both bigots, so be careful where you point that finger, sonny. But isn't that what slashdot is for these days? ;)

I agree that slashdot isn't as good as it was 3-4 years ago; I was there too, before User Accounts, even. But I think that owes more to the sheer scale of things than it does to the quality.

Even the Slashdot story submissions have gotten somewhat better, though not by much. However, whatever was left of a community on slashdot has been lost.

Yeah, uh huh. Like you're *so* much more informed on the topic.

    1) Java removed actual powerful functionality from C and C++, and made the whole mess less maintainable , less useful, and far less efficient. No decent way to implement proper tail recursion, no macros, and a broken class/package protection model all spring to mind immediately.

    2) I can list other massively successful products that have sucked as well. Success is not a guage of worth, efficiency, or really anything else besides marketing. Java sucks just as hard as Word 6.0 did when it came out. And using "Java" in the same breath as "enterprise software" is a pretty good indication that you have no idea what you're talking about, or are also trolling.

    3) We really don't care about your opinions in the Gnome/KDE flamewar. Personally, I hate them both, but I'm not going to let you draw us all into a pointless "GUI War" argument. Just remember that KDE is generally modeled after Windows, so if you like their way of doing things, then maybe you'll find KDE intuitive. I find a command prompt to be more intuitive.

The hard part would be analyzing context to ensure a lack of ambiguity.

I got this idea after I noticed how the same program written in Pascal compressed much better than the equivalent C program (and generally smaller, as well!); that's because the Pascal program had a more consistent structure, which reduced ambiguity as well as the total amount of information needed to write the program (in the Information Theory sense of the word).

You won't see Windows available "for non-commercial use" anytime soon; that's a huge part of their market.

But, more importantly, you won't see QNX on the desktop. In fact, I'd be amazed if you see it *anywhere*, because it really has no place.

QNX isn't a real-time operating system in the HRT sense of the word. And soft real-time operating systems make no sense, because they don't provide any real guarantees! What real-time OS would want to worry about your brand of video card slowing it down?

However, you won't see QNX on the desktop any time soon, either. And if you did, it would involve adding all sorts of ridiculous things that a RTOS should *never* have. Dumber, even, than when MS moved graphics into the kernel and caused 10 times more NT boxes to bluescreen.

So I give up. This announcement is pointless, and Slashdot's coverage of it is, yet again, completely inappropriate. Feel free to download QNX; let me know if you can get it to do anything that's Hard Realtime, though, and I'll be amazed.

Could someone please explain to me what this means? The Microsoft speak is too thick for me.

If software is taxpayer-funded, then the taxpayers should have a right to use it; the GPL doesn't prohibit that.

If it has a GPL license to begin with, then whoever adds to the project should be educated as to what that means. Personally, I think that people should be educated on the terms of Microsoft's standard licensing agreements--they look much more sinister (here's one; spot the violations of your rights that the DMCA will legalize...).

If it doesn't have a GPL license to begin with, then don't use the GPL if you don't want to, or release it under multiple licenses instead. Nothing should stop you from doing that.

And what does 'innovate' mean in this context? I have yet to see Microsoft innovate, but they use the word all the time. Does it mean "make money", or "exploit the user"? How are they (mis)using that word?

I would argue that Slashdot is often a place for software announcements, but isn't a place for responsible journalism. In a nutshell, Slashdot is "Stuff That Matters, for Nerds". But it isn't News. Think about that.
