Here is an article (in french) from Computer Magazine that describes the situation in Belgium.
The ISPA (Internet Service Providers Association) tells us that at the end of 2002 we had 1.7 million connected homes (19% growth over 2001). The total number for broadband is 870000 for 2002 (90% growth over 2001). This is 51% of all connections.
There might be an error in the article since the number mentionned after is 672.000. Which is still 40%.
I was about to make the same remark.
The article is not very clear (I must say it's poorly written), and the poster (eyefish) is quoting the wrong part.
When I run Mozilla and NS4.79 alongside on my Celeron 450 (192MB RAM), I can clearly see that moz's interface in really slower. It's a shame since the page rendering is really good.
What is you CPU speed ?
And is it running windoze ? (I've several linux boxes, but none is running X. So, I can't compare)
I don't kwow, but it can be a windoze-specific problem. The best programmers are working on the Linux version, and we're left with second-hand programmers.;)
The problem when discussing about speed, is that the two sides are usually speaking of different things. You're thinking about the rendering speed of a page, while those who have a gripe are focusing on the speed of the interface (at least under windoze).
I can tell you that on slower CPUs - below 1Ghz - the response time of the interface is slow, and very noticeable compared to other programs. I'm speaking of all the menus, bookmarks, Preferences menu. All this because XUL has to be interpreted each time something is displayed for the interface.
<body> <font face="Verdana" size="+2"> <b> <p>This is my duh page.</p> <p>It is a nice page.</p> <p>It has three paragraphs. Wow.</p> </b> </font> </body>
Which is 164 bytes long, while your css version is 186 bytes.;)
Keyboard navigation didn't work for the most part.
Most of the power users (myself included;) use only the keyboard. We've never seen problem with it. If you're still using it, can you give some example so I can help you?
Also, feel free to ask questions in alt.usenet.offline-reader.forte-agent .:)
but it sucks for actually reading news...the interface is rather cumbersome for moving through the messages.
What problem did you encountered while moving between messages?
There are plenty of ways of doing it, and it depends on the sorting method. It's a very powerful program.
My firewall is equiped with a http proxy server which has the hability to filter url. Check WWWOFFLE (on freshmeat) or directly the homesite.
Once you've found the correct url to use in the filters, the majority of the ads you had been seeing will disappear. You'll be surfing 95% ads free! You can also filter headers transmitted to and from the server (cookies, browser version,...)
My results so far are:
Arround 90% of the ads filtered
Popup and popunder filtered: don't even open if called by external js, otherwise content filtered.
Some "brand toolbars" wiped (xoom and nbci when they existed, netscape, freeservers, lycos)
No watermark or ads of any sort on Geocities (for all sites)
External stats/counters sites filtered (mainly those adding ads to the counter)
...
There are some other programs doing the same thing. You should be able to find one that fulfills your needs.
Here is my solution to your problem, without having to change anything in your network. It's also the solution I use.
Since you've several computer connected to the network, reserve some place on the hard-drive to backup information from the other computers (a folder or a partition, whatever). Decide what you need to backup (ini files,...) and write a script to do it for you (in bash under Linux, or a.bat file under windoze). Write the script so that it erases the previous backup only after the current one is finished. Just start this script when you feel a need to back up.
I've done this for my email archive. I wouldn't want to lose it in a crash.;) (almost did once)
This solution is the best for you in your current network configuration. If one computer fails, you'll still have your data available on one of the others.
For those with only one computer, if you have two HDs (not 2 partitions on the same drive), the solution is to use the second drive to backup (data from) the first, and the first drive to backup the second (you usually don't install programs only on the first one).
My last tip: use zip or rar to reduce the size of the backup (and the number of files). It's a little longer to do, but you'll backup more in less space.
I'm running SCRT under windoze to access my linux Firewall. I had to edit the keymap to have it work correctly with the F1-F10 keys. But I'm still having problem with many keys. Can you help me with this?
I'm using mc to browse-edit-start. I still can't use CTRL+ENTER to copy the file name in the command line. CTRL-PGUP, CTRL-PGDN, KeyPad+, KeyPad-, are keys impossible to pass correctly.
A more broader question. Does anyone know what is the syntax used to pass all these control keys from the terminal to the server? CTRL keys, ALT keys... Is there a prefix code? one code for the control key + one code for the key, ESC-encoded or not?
"http://archives.nytimes.com" isn't working anymore, we're redirected back to "http://www.nytimes.com". So we can't bypass their (free) subscription anymore.
Maybe it's time for someone from slashdot to get in touch with them. Why not ask them to open a new url specifically for us. Like "archive" it'll not require login but would gives them (NYT) a hint as who is reading their news (slashdot readers).
The use of asbestos was banned (or cut back severely) after they had already insulated floors -10 through 70. That's why it is more dangerous on 70+.
Can someone recall in which story the plane struck WTC1? Wasn't it below or around 70? If it was, this story was probably treated with asbestos...
Just a guess.
This blaze wasn't a usual fire. You don't often see tons of kerozen burning inside buildings.;)
But if the fire is low enough (and cool enough) the firefighters can get to it and put it out before it causes catestrophic weakening of the support structure.
The problem is that only intensive fuel burning can cause steal to melt so easily. And you need special equipment to extinguish this type of fire. I think firefighter in WTC1&2 only had water at their disposal (through the pipes inside the building). Even if the fire was around the 10th floor they would have enormous difficulties to stop it.
Besides the steal armature was enclosed in concrete, which is why it lasted over an hour before melting. The intense temperature caused the concrete to crack and expose its metallic innards. I don't know if asbestos could have saved the towers.

The server can detect if your browser, after requesting an HTML page, also requests the contained images. I guess it works only if the pages are served from the sames server as the images.
Which they are usually not.;)
Of course, you'll always see at least one web page, as the server doesn't know yet if you'll request the ads as well. If you don't, it can deny to handle further requests from your IP.
And what if this IP address is the one of your provider's proxy? If they effectively block access they will deny it for the whole network. Do they really want surfers to leave their site? (Since only a minority will know what's really happening)
We still have to see if their system really works. I've been to their site, but saw nothing about AdKEY.
We've seen so much failed services these past years that I'm confident this one will fail too.
The broadcast networks can only afford to be free if they have income, and if enough people start skipping the commercials, they'll have to do something about it.
And how would they know you're not watching their commercials?
I never watch them. And using my VHS recorder I can also skip them. What's the difference?
That's exactly what I was thinking. :)
What about an experiment with a bushman (or an australian aborigine) and a texan?
The original article from the NYTimes is more complete. You can read it here
You can try FineReader from ABBYY
I would like to confirm this.

We're still waiting for beta 2.0 to begin.

Try to understand the slashdot interface before making idiotic comments.

There is nothing you can do about it. Slashcode is adding the space in the text. If you want to post correct urls you'll to use html coding in your message./ 03PRIV.html
Like this: http://archives.nytimes.com/2001/10/03/technology
The format is like this:
<a href="put the url here">put highlighted text here</a> continue text...
