    Every event in time effects all future events. Yes, if the creation of a company 30 years ago that effected the economy and computer industry (for good or ill) as much as Microsoft has had never occurred, then yes, history would have transpired differently and Google would almost certainly not exist.

    There is not a doubt in my mind, however, that some other company would have arisen that would have done pretty much the same thing that google does now. It's a niche that would need to be filled.

    It isn't really the DMCA that's doing it. If the DMCA never existed, you would still be allowed to unlock the phone. This is something that someone had to decide that the DMCA didn't cover.

    Is it common knowledge in the USA just how much the government / mainstream media warps people's view of the world through carefully constructed propaganda?

    Honestly? I have no idea. I know that I know that the government and media warp everything, and my friends are aware of it too. But I have no idea how much the average person is aware of it.

    I use Firefox and I don't use an ad blocker.
    I ignore ads the old fashioned way. By not looking at them.

    Ok, ok. is a bad idea. I'm an honest person, so my first instinct before I have a chance to think about things is that other people will be honest too.

    They should put in some kind of tag to indicate that search engines and other parsing scripts shouldn't pick up on the tag's contents.

    The whole point of a semantic tag is that it is machine parsable. A script that is interpreting the page will know what parts of the page is the article, which parts are the navigation, which parts are the advertisements, and so on.

    Actually, they need to put in an <ad> tag.
