Whether this is a good laugh or not is a matter of taste, but don't say they didn't warn you...besides, you can hardly hold Slashdot responsible for what posts appear in a certain type of story. You could have predicted it though:-)
Let's think hypotethical for a moment. Both Intel and M$ start losing major amounts of marketshare to AMD and *nix resulting in the majority of households running for example Mac OS X on an AMD 4Ghz. What will Slashdot do? Are we going to be bashing AMD by then? Will it be cool to use Intel, as they're only small?
I couldn't agree more! There's nothing wrong with dreaming about Utopia. It's just that you'd have to eliminate approx. 99 percent of the human race to actually achieve it. Somebody deny the fact that for every Utopian dreamer there 33 pieces of shit and 66 ignorant morons running around...
To be honest, I'm not a Troll, just in a bad mood today...besides, quite a lot of my recent attempts at being funny got moderated as being interesting or informative for one reason or another. And I'm not stupid, just awake for a very long time...
Kiss the big corporation's asses, get them to sponsor you, run for president(and win by by more than 700 votes, for crying out loud), and then you can do something about your former "sponsors"...
It's a psychological thing. Slashdot readers are usually nerds right? This probably means that they've been badly bullied at school, right? So now there is Slashdot. Hiding behind a nickname, or worse anonymously, we can kick back at the bully, in this case Intel, in other cases Microsoft.
The author seems to be of the opinion that Intel is somehow in the advantage here, but as long as the P4 doesn't carry SMP, the Palomina should come out victoriously on this one. Seems the P4 will be covered with horseshit.

Hasn't it always been better to, well, be better?
Me thinks it depends a bit on what you're better at...someone else being proud of being a better "frist poster" than me is not necessarily a good thing, is it?
It's probably a lot cheaper than having to find a permanent solution to the tendency of the current "Homo Scrapus" to plunder the planet without thinking twice. Besides, we're going to need lots of metal to build coolers for the P4s...
It definitely does not seem Utopian from a selfish viewpoint, sice I would be jubilant at this kind of development. It is Utopian when I use my experiences with the human being in general as a reference...
SETI@home handels the calculation of the data, not the collection of it...and all those teams most certainly aren't going to store and mirror all that data.
if this Universe Database thingy starts spittin' out 42's left and right, I'll bloody well marry it. You don't get a more consistent partner than that...
It might be just me, and maybe I'm paranoid due to too much Slashdotting, but this seems strange. I mean, all the Astronomers sharing their data with each other, working together on a mutual project. Next thing we know they'll be standing hand in hand singing "we all stand together!". Somehow the Utopian thought behind it makes my logical circuits sputter...
MS used to use FIF for Encarta, Art Gallery and a bunch of other multimedia reference titles - I expect they've gone to JPEG since they now use DVDROMs and don't care so much about space or quality.
Imagine the horror when she announces her new job as Director of Development on the Windows 2022 project. That's bound to kill him, if it doesn't make him turn around in his grave, that is...
Guess someone mistook my miserable attempt at being funny for something else. Ah well, guess that's why I do techsupport instead of being a highly overpaid comedian...maybe Seinfeld should start doing techsup as well...
Terribly sorry, but I'm going to have to flame your post, and my own as well, while I'm at it. We've been going on about how evil all these monopolized services are, but as far as I know all those non-monopolized in the UK don't really deliver well, do they? Opinions, other people? Can anybody comment on the situation in their respective countries? Because my unfortunate experience is that these (previously) government-regulated providers with monopolies do turn out to do an effcient job on the overall...

Trust me, if you wanna play Quake3 at 1024 using a 2MB S3 Virge you'll need more than 650 Mhz.
1 P4 1.5Ghz is faster than 1 1.2 Ghz Palomino. Fortunately, AMD can call in the infantry and add a second Athlon...

or does the author sound a bit frustrated? One BSOD to much, I guess...
Sorry for all the inconvenience.

this they wouldn't need so much storage...

This is the release - you should try it out today, because CowboyNeal sez so, and he's currently updating it on his Vaio.
I'd somehow really appreciate it if he were to install it first and tell me to do so later...when he's sure it works...
