It begs the question, how big are towers going to get for End Users?
Although I'm anything but an end-user, the computer of the future as I have it in mind is an easily upgradable Motherboard-like-thingy which is conveniently hidden somewhere with a nicely stylished USB2/FireWire Hub somewhere in which you can plug your just as nicely stylished drives. Although I'm a hardly a fan of the I-Mac, but IMHO it did revolutionize computer design. Now how long until Joe Schmoe can buy a desk with an integrated computer in it and the Firewire hub somewhere on the back?
Aside from the fact that you're a troll, why the hell would you compess music with this kind of capacity? Make a plain.wav rip of all your audio CD's and there you go.
A car stereo using this technology to play a plain and simple audio CD which has 140GB of music and a maximum of say, something like 10000 tracks. With this kind of storage, who needs compression anyway?
What kind of a drive are we going to need to read these things? And more importantly, will we able to buy said drive next Christmas incorporated into a PS3?
IMHO, They've effectively said that "we own everything you do, say or work on which may be considered to be in competition with anything we do anywhere in the world".... "Within the limits of the law"
In the words of Joe Schmoe: "We'll sue you if we can get away with it!".
In the case of most state schools and just normal projects the answer is going to be the tax payers and this would of course include you.
Excuse me? When did tax-payers become entitled to profits made by using those taxes? Does this mean tax-payers can also be held liable directly when the government runs a loss?
The school owns the money and can spend it within the agreement of the school with the state. If said agreement does not include a section stating that any products created on that school become property of the state or the public, then they are property of the school, plain and simple.
You should sort things like this out up-front. If you're going to receive some sort of compensation for the code you write, then the person or institution giving you the compensation is going to be the owner of the code. What they do with it afterwards is their business. When it's code that's been written to pass a certain exam or to gain a grade it's different though IMHO. This is something that should become the property of the student. One thing is for sure, you should put these things on paper before you even sign in to a certain university. That way everybody knows exactly where they stand, and prospective students can even base the decision to choose a certain university based on this...
If you are sure that everything is in order, you tell them plain right "no". You as an institution are supposed to be innocent until proven otherwise so tell the BSA to "go hither" and prove me otherwise. They're a bunch of bluffers, the magic word is "call". If they want to check licenses, tell them to get their warrants straight based on a justified accusation, after which you claim a disgruntled student to be a hardly convincing witness blah, blah, blah etc. It's called paper-war.
How many signatures does it take to start a new party in the US? Something tells me just the Slashdot Crowd(tm)will be enough already to start one. Now for a name...
Ok, but that's common sense knowledge. There's hardly any need explaining that to the Slashdot crowd, now is there? Question is, whatcha gonna do about it, or is that something I shouldn't ask around here?
In the place where I live there's actually a place (diner) where they have an audio system (nickelodeon) that makes use of MP3's and MP3's only. It can either play randomly or well, do all the other things WinAmp does as well, including a few more. As far as I know they never got in trouble with the law, knock on wood. They did get quite a lot of music from the Net though...
But on the Azerty layout, you have a "é" key on your keyboard instead of having the "4" button twice. Now that does sound more efficient, or is it just me?
Evil dictators quite often become dictators cause they're scared of what they're trying to dictate. Ever hear someone scream:"Arrgghh, it's scary, kill it!"? My point exactly.
With all due respect, you're making a lot of sense and your information seems pretty correct, but what exactly is the making you're trying to make. Is copyright good, bad, ugly or none/all of the above?
It's this little process most people refer to as "learning". So instead of sitting in a dusty classroom for hours with an equally dusty teacher trying to stuff your head full of theoretical knowledge you buy a reasonably cheap peace of hardware and play around with it. That way you won't be faced with teachers having difficulties with the fact that their students are generally smarter anyway...
Once you get used to it, Azerty is actually more useful than Qwerty. Instead of having a row of numbers on top of your keyboard that are located on the right of your keyboard as well, those buttons actually do something useful. Having è,é, etc available on one key only makes pretty much sense to me. It was getting used to qwerty again after I spent a week in France that really pissed me off. What was it again? Alt137? No that's not it. Alt131, etc....
Bush is going to win, that's for sure... Harry's bar in Paris voted for Bush and so far they been wrong only once...but seriously. I somehow remember something about the last time an American President won by so close a margin. Didn't he get shot?
When are we going to get to the stage when we can actually launch human-piloted (or not) craft and physically go out and explore these things and prove them right or wrong?
When we have volunteers that are nuts enough to take a ship close enough to something that is "mostly harmless" and sane enough to actually tell something about useful about, should the somehow survive.

Sorry, couldn't resist...

Care to tell me why? What's wrong with the French? Or Paris, for that matter? Aside from the price you pay for a glass of beer that is, of course.

Question is, where do you bury something the size of that thing?

Start your own band. Anybody need a bass-player?

How big exactly is a century? It somehow seems like a bit of a hassle to start turning things like that around. Can't we just leave it the way it is?

why would the company -care- if people modify it?
They should care. If you do a really good job they should hire you...

Black Hole(tm), safe when used as directed.
Wow, cool link. What is that? The void? Dark side of the force? Clicking parent is also really ehhh interesting.
MSbreath? Ah well, money doesn't stink. As for the secret service, do they have jurisdiction outside the USA? Because in that case, come and get me!
