    • Research

I guess I just don't have the will power to do both. I even only read /. via rss using "Mail" on OS Leopard.

You're telling me that the reason that it's worth $90 is BECAUSE IT RUNS SOME WINDOWS APPS? You're fucking kidding me.

No, I'm not kidding you. I am talking about people who want to switch because they are fed up with the fact that windows is a piece of shit. Yet, they feel tied to the OS because nothing else will run that ONE app that they have to have. To that person, $90 may be reasonable.

    Windows only costs $100.

    Plus $X for McAfee
Plus $X for firewall software (or hardware)
Plus $X on beer to have geek friends help clean up the machine from spyware, virus, etc.
    and so on.....

Don't be fooled by the sticker price on the box, windows costs a lot more than $100.

You're telling me that you think users should switch away from the 900lb microsoft gorilla in order to get the freedom (speech) and the freeness (beer) that Linux offers?!? And THEN you tell me that you think users should pay 90% the cost of windows, in order to be able to run a few select windows apps, because they will still need them in order to switch?!?

Again, I disagree that $90 is 90% of the cost. I'm talking about your average joe type consumer that might actually be getting fed up with microsoft crap. The other percentage of just plain clueless will probably just switch over to Mac soon anyway.

If it's only 10% cheaper, and not all your games and apps will work, plus your desktop is somewhat unfamiliar, plus it's generally not as professional and not as good, then why switch?

Because linux (or Mac OS X) is very stable, secure, less likely to be hit by virus or spyware, etc.

    But, I could be wrong.

That is more than a little naive. While I agree with your statement in principal, the fact of the matter is you are never going to gain market share without first offering users a fairly painless transition.

If this were not the case, many an OS that has fallen by the wayside would be in dominance today. Microsoft Windows is living proof that to be number one, you do not have to be the best. Superior product != Dominance. Sad, but it is true. (Examples: OS/2, BeOS, Mac OS X, and many more)

The biggest advantage I see to OSS is that it is currently trying to offering users as painless a transition as possible, then, once the product is in dominance (like apache for instance) the focus does not shift. The focus can remain to provide a solid, secure, stable, and still somewhat innovative product.

    But, I could be wrong.

I used to agree with the above statement until I had to help many newbies "Try Out" linux. Most of them had tried to install on their own, but ran into trouble. Once I got it installed, most were impressed. But some were just entirely turned off from the first impression the installer left them with.

Granted, this was a year and more ago, most distros have improved their installers dramatically; however, I would not include debian in that list.

I see you have swallowed the anti-republican-conservative propaganda being spewed by the socialist Gore campaign. I live in Texas and can proudly say that I was one of the children growing up that did not have health insurance. I don't see what the big fuss is, I didn't have health insurance until it was part of my benefits at work after graduating from college. Yet, everytime I had a cold, or cut my finger, or ... I went to a doctor and received immediate treatment.

In Houston over the last few weeks there has been a controversy over the fact that people are calling 911, getting ambulances, and going to the emergency room for simple things like headaches and filling prescriptions. Less than 5% or so ever pay for the ambulance ride, much less the treatment.

If you need care here in America, you can get it, anytime, anyday. Period. In Houston it is at Ben Taub hospital. In the small town I grew up in, it was at the only local hospital. They would not turn anyone away. Pay if you can, over time even.

I just don't see where all this hype that the Gore campaign has been spewing has come from. It really annoys me. They only do it because they need some issue to scare the American people with. I honestly believe that it is very important that the Republicans be given a chance and hope that they win the White House and keep the Congress. I believe that the reason there is so much of the apathy you describe is that we have had 40 years of Democrat control of the Congress. They have been very busy those 40 years passing laws and slowly eating away at our civil liberties, while all the while demonizing others as doing just that.

I agree with an earlier poster who said he would be happy if Congress took a few years off and stopped passing laws. I think, more importantly, we should give the Repulicans a chance to get in there and repeal some of the burdonsome laws.

Granted, I tend to vote Republican; however, I go into each election with an open mind and truly vote for who I believe will represent me the best. However, I have recently come to the decision that I cannot in good conscience vote for a Democrat because I truly believe that they are little more than socialist slowly attempting to chip away at our rights. First it was tobacco, soon it will be SUV's. They are attempting to legislate through lawsuits rather than dealing with the issues upfront.

As for are there difference between the two parties? Yes. I am a conservative (not a Republican) first and foremost. I believe that the conservative movement is about taking responsibility for yourself and only allowing the government to do what it is there for as described in the constitution. I believe that the liberal (Democrat) movement is about having the government pass more and more laws to try and take care of everyone (cradle to grave). They are doing this for no other reason than to create dependants upon them that must continue to vote for them or lose their favorite government program.

    Thanks.
