but rather a stonewalling of any challenge to the system that does not have transparency and verifiability. It's not that these voting systems CAN'T be configured to ensure that tampering is difficult, and easily detected; it's that both the vendors and the state governments in many battleground states (including one governed by the President's brother) ACTIVELY OPPOSE such changes.

  2. Not surprising in the least on Computer Problems Already Affecting Florida Voters · · Score: 0, Flamebait

Electronic voting machines are the new tool for rigging elections. Instead of insisting manufacturers build in safeguards like printers to ensure that recounts are possible, the governor pushed to have Florida election law changed to not require recounts any longer.

You watch this issue. It'll be a nasty fight. The record number of people registering to vote aren't flocking to the county seat because they're happy: people in this country are apathetic when things are going the way they like. I don't see how Bush can win legally with the massive number of people turning out to register for the first time.

You have it wrong. This episode wasn't about the POLITICAL process in the U.S. It was about the idiocy and whoring in the MEDIA that does not serve the public interest or advance the public discourse.

The Daily Show does not mock POLITICS as much as it mocks the MEDIA's coverage of politics. If we had a viable news media in this country, The Daily Show would cease to exist.

The shredder is a media-created myth.

And let me see if I've got this straight. Saddam was a brutal ruler for over two decades. He gassed an ethnic minority with gas provided by the US (Reagan was President, Rumsfeld was SecDef) sprayed from US-provided helicopters. Saddam filled the infamous mass graves with Shi'a encouraged to rise up against him by George HW Bush, who left them to die when they heeded him and called on him for aid.

Now, because Saddam brutalized these people, it made it OK for the US troops to do the same thing to them? The general who submitted the report that was later leaked to the New Yorker (Taguba) pointed out that 60% of the people in there were no threat to anyone.

Go spin your wheel of justifications for war in Iraq and let me know what you hit. Remember, WMD is out, and apparently so is liberation, since you don't give a shit about those people.

The acts committed were specifically designed to traumatize Muslim men by attacking social taboos. Not only did they know what they were doing, they were trained, after a fashion, to do it. Rumsfeld could not give McCain a straight answer on Friday as to who was in command and gave the orders to the MPs. And why was a brigadier general in Military Intelligence (Karpinski) given command of MPs, anyway? This looks deliberate. At least the rape rooms are shut down... err, under new management...

The naked partisanship of the president of Diebold combined with the insecure nature of the Diebold product, and the contentious nature of the last presidential election, and the current low approval ratings of President Bush, leads to reasonable doubts about the trustworthiness of Diebold.

For an administration that stressed its goal to remove even the appearance of impropriety, it's a poor political move to approve the use of such machines.
