I was kinda surprised to find windows styles My Pictures folder inside of my (lower case m) Documents folder after i played with spore for a bit. Poking into the Spore Bundle, I found a Windows File system for the location of the Spore data. I was even able to drop the assets from the windows full version into this file system and add some parts! :D

here is your middle ground: a birth lottery. in this system there is no such thing as the creme of the crop. only would be mommies and daddies hoping to get a birth right by buying a lottery ticket. if you win, you get to go to parenting school, and from there, THEN you can have a baby. think you want a 2nd kid? go get another lotto ticket!

what they do in china with the 1 child per couple rule is horrendous, it only guarantees the population only shrinks. a birth lotto allows the government to specify exactly how many children are born in a given year.

the best way to enforce this is to have the government forcibly temporarily sterilize half of the population population, and then reverse it upon graduation from parenting school. there could be other solutions, such as forced abortions, but those are probably a little more traumatic.

on the other hand, this system would legalize the term bastard: an unlicensed child.

while procreation is a fact of life, homo sapien sapiens have shown that they will overpopulate and destroy an environment. if there was some kind of universal population control, overpopulation and war would be a thing of the past.

aren't pipe dreams wonderful? It would mean the enslavement of the entire world. China is just an experiment in population control. Al Gores international carbo^HHHHHH* life tax we will fund something, why not this?

Actually, my basic complaint is that in the default view for each OS, it's not intuitively obvious which icons represent files or links to files which are directly executable. None of the three OS has this as a feature, to the best of my knowledge. With leopard, one feature you have is called Quick Look. QL shows you a preview of the selected file if it can read it. if it can't, it shows a bunch of metadata about the file, including it's type (Application, vs Microsoft Word Document to use the example mentioned earlier).

And before that we had column view. Column view shows you a bunch of metadata (yes, including file type) on the selected item - unless that item is a folder, than it shows it's file list in the next column over.

And before THAT we had list view. In list view you have a bunch of columns showing us a bunch of selectable metadata (inclusing - you guessed it - it's file type) on all visible files. List view has existed in some form or another on the macintosh since 1984. If you slow down and pay attention to the metadata that is being presented to you, you might notice that it tells you when you're about to open an application!
