Before alot of the RIAA mistreatment of their customers for P2P, I used to use it to check out new music, typically purchasing about 15-30 cd's a month. It was common for me to hit the local best buy on a weekend and pick up those titles that I had checked out and wanted. I found trying to collect whole albums via P2P tedious and felt it was easier to just buy them (since time is in short supply due to work). I also belonged to BMG and usually bought older titles there, to fill out my collection. When the RIAA started this whole mess, I canceled by BMG membership with a letter telling them to let me know when they elected to drop out of the RIAA and I'd rejoin. These recent RIAA measures have caused two actions on my part - first, I stopped using P2P to check out new stuff. I felt that's what they wanted, that's what they'll get. As a result, I almost never buy anything new anymore. I've also decided to just plain boycott them period. I will not buy anything new first hand. I have enough music to last me a lifetime anyway and those cds I do really want, I'll get second hand so the members gain no additional funds from me. They forgot one KEY item in their greed, this is MUSIC, it is NOT FOOD, AIR, WATER, CLOTHING or SHELTER. If they ever get around to a subscription model that allows umlimited download for a reasonable flat fee, I'll rethink my decision but the path these knuckleheads are on, I'm not holding my breath.
Working for a large IT company may not be your kettle of fish but.... if you think you may remotely want to work for a fortune 500 company in the IT segment, you won't even get considered without college. It almost doesn't matter how good you are, you won't. I've done a ton of hiring over the past decade in this area and generally, I won't even be offered applications from the Personnel area that don't have a Bachelors, regardless of certifications. This may not be the bext method but it's what's in place. So... do yourself and your future employers a favor and go.
Let's face it.... as much as you some of you may not want to acknowledge, linux will never make it as a mainstream OS until something like Lindows works. While they are some down sides it (understanding what's out there is only a preview release), it's the closest linux-based OS I've seen that I could have my Mom run.... I think there are also a couple of incorrect perceptions here that need to be cleared up... It will install Office from within lindows (without any Windows on the machine) successfully. I did a clean install, no windows on the drive whatsoever, and watched it install Office2ooo without a hitch. I also see absolutely no reason at all why you can't dual-boot this with another linux. In fact, I have a spare laptop that now has Windows 98, a custom version of RH linux developed within my company and lindows all working.... the only downside I've found with the sneak preview is in the case of the sneak preview, you're always in root (which is fine for a preview but not something I've live with for my work) and I found there was no pcmcia support for lindows alongside windows installs. Obviously, it worked fine with a lindows clean install but pcmcia isn't supported in the sneak preview for a lindows inside windows install...
If you care about linux (and I do) then you should realize that it's long-term viability is directly linked to mainstream acceptance and use. Anything that helps this fight should be supported and needs to be.... lindows does and will help that.
give me a break. nice way to embrace fans... must have gone to the metallica school of PR. we should expect as much from someone who won't release on dvd either. one less movie i'll have to sleep thru
