    i was just at an origin installation where they are plotting the known universe for simulation and experimental purposes. the software will be developed on a multiple origin system and will run on linux. i think that by using a common platform and then extending sgi specific technologies, they will save large sums of money while maintaining the performance features which we all know and love. i've sold my sgi stock, but they are still the only game in town for high perf visuallization.

    we need to teach children about their valuable place in society as consumers! they're giving wonderful jobs to underpriveledged children in far away places. certainly, if they only knew their effect on the world, they would never kill themselves. or, maybe they would be sure to take out a few fellow consumers with them. as an aging society, we can't quite get our own priorities straight, so what exactly do you expect from them. ironically, "berzerk" does seem to fit, since we are waging a war on the values and attention capacity of children, and they innately sense the conflict. "fen" is also a good word.

    legal action was threatened against me when i left a porn dot com with my personal puppet. this puppet was for my "personal" research, yet X company felt that this puppet could be "used" for business advantage. they seemed to feel that since it was used in for professional purposes that it was company intellectual property.

    another option, another reason not to use 2000/nt server. an empty toy box is... well, a boat i guess, but i cannot imagine that a port from linux could be incredibly time consuming. cobalt would double their market immediately. they should also port it to solaris so that it can run on those nifty $1000.00 boxes. btw, where can one get cheap ram for those (x1/t1) boxes?

    as a user of various server appliances, i can say that back-up was an issue not addressed, and where available, it is rather expensive in a small business setting.

    ...ibm produces inexpensive ppc workstations ala sun? would ibm rather use their own processors as opposed to intel's, given the issues intel is having with itanium? linux is linux is linux, whether it runs on intel hardware or ppc.

    the idea of having information displayed appropriately is much more relevant. much of what is printed is unnecessary. certainly books which we think of as static--literature--will continue to be printed, but dynamic information--encyclopedia--can be read in equivalent ways. an o'reilly book would be really great as e-paper or even a couple of e-papers so that one could cross reference. the whole dynabook thing is really not comparable. a bulky reader is a problem, but sheets of cardboard are not. it is going to take a lot of time, and the technology of writing to this media will take even longer.

    i would think that the power of ccombining a gui with a cli is exactly the reason you say not to, which is that the user could then combine the power of combined statements and a gui where they feel like it. the integration of the "word" with the visual is exactly where an advancement will probably happen. what is difficult in this scenario is the depth of selection necessary. for example, right clicking in a windows way gives me choices above a click. how do i go from nouns to verbs with a mouse, and how do i go from this to sentences, so to speak. the mouse has certainly hit a limit.

    are there any modular concepts in chip design? for example are there any objects that do specific types of processes, and a common way of communicating between objects? a component type of architecture was mentioned in the article. how does this relate to a transmetta type processor, where cutomization could be accomplished through software?

    i certainly never felt like i fit in. aren't there higher modes of thinking than knowing all the answers on a quiz show or remembering every telephone number. oh, hold on, i do remember every number i see.

    this is exactly why osx has such a good opportunity to succeed. since there is essentially an open base upon which a "closed" and well supported interface--like irix--is placed, companies will have the opportunity to create "services" for customers. now if linux had a good "novice" interface, for products like the sony ivilla, it could compete with m$. the advantage of linux is that one does not need to reinvent the wheel for every necessary service, and the open source facilitates clean code, but somebody needs to facilitate the user.

    computers are cheap at the low end, but as with businesses, the true costs of comuters manifest themselves in training and support. devices like the sony ivilla and relevant downloadable applications with good online capabilities will change this. schools similarly face issues of application integration and technical support issues.

    one day we may stop worshipping inventors, leaders... and come to realize that we are all in this together. we build upon other's ideas, without which there would be very little progress. yes, inventors and even leaders can be special, but it is strange how certain ideas often manifest themselves in different places at the same general time.

    as with waste, usage needs to be attacked first. if you continue to build capacity, as with highways, the capacity will be used. efficient products are no joke, except in the good old usa, and we are one of the most wasteful and polluting of industries. but hey, let's do more research. duh. we deserve to die for our f_cked up priorities.

    "but it could also give the crazies what they want in a harmless matter." the determination of what is considered "crazy" is exactly what such a precedent would be useful for. 90% perspiration/ 10% inspiration i think is the ratio for invention, and i can only imagine that this is the same for behavior. the government would not be happy with what i am thinking right now...

    webobjects is pretty nifty, though i have only played with it briefly. a good database, however, is apple's true shortcoming. combined with some opensource-ish project management and content management applications though, the servers would be really powerful. having been bitten a few too many times by their server strategies though (two original osx servers--backup software anyone?), apple will need to convince their customers to adopt an apple implementation as opposed to notes for example. an apple cube server with an internal ait, and good apps...

    tis true. mac os has been a pain in the _ss from the ground up. but next was/is different, specifically due to the bsd underpinnings. i really do look forward to a mac that will play nice in the network neighborhood. but, given that osx "may" compete a little too well with linuxppc, i think apple should invest and finance a good outside linux and darwin development unit. 2c.

    as usual, technology tries to recreate a space when what is really needed is augmentation of what exists. help the teachers focus on what they should do--foster learning. what if your average programmer ordered his/her office supplies, cleaned their office, planned the project for the day, tested their work for the day/week, and where asked to add features for the developmentally disabled the week prior to launch... this would really facilitate great code, don't you think? creating stimulating environments is much easier after one takes care of the basics. teachers should be professionals and supported as such. "the teaching gap" is a great book on the subject.

    well the interface may compete in certain areas, but macos/osx has many things which will allow apple to retain its 10% market share. as a designer color control, font and output control, video production, multimedia authoring are incredibly important and difficult to implement through windows. but with osx we can (hopefully) play nice with the networks, which has become incredibly important also. nautilus and network computers will eat into the low end and the developer market, which is more problematic for microsoft.
