You are correct, sir. I can tell you this because I have lived there. Plus I am English, and most of us just know this.
Actually, Leicester is easy compared to some place names in England. Shrewsbury is interesting, as not even the locals can agree (~"Shroos-b'ry" [rhymes with "shoes"] vs. ~"Shrose-bury" [rhymes with "throws"]) (pardon my phonetics [not to mention my nested parentheses]). I think it has something to do with which side of the river you live, but I haven't actually lived there so don't know the full details.
Probably best not to mention Slaithwaite or Featherstonehaugh.
I was a MENSA member for a very short while. They told me I had an IQ of 158. I didn't know what it meant, so maybe I wasn't that smart. I was smart enough to work out within the first 12 months that the overpriced annual subscription bought me nothing but a mag full of spam, and the opportunity to associate with a bunch of people who like to feel smart.
Often, the whole "hifi" chain, interconnects, etc., can be vulnerable to noise.
I'm pretty fussy, but I find (when listening to lossless sources) my Sony MDR-7509HD headphones give pleasing results plugged into the onboard Realtek Audio system my PC.
I use Windows and Linux (servers) -- mainly so I can choose the best tools in either world. Linux provides a CIFS file system accessible from Windows. I use EAC to rip my CDs to wav format, and Linux to enclode to flac.
Incidentally, this doesn't so far seem to be a particularly informed thread, though opinions abound! Sure, not everyone can tell the difference between mp3 (or any other lossy format) & flac representations of a particular recording. For those who can't, the choice is simple: go with mp3 & save the space! For those who can, the choice is almost as simple: if you can afford the space, go with flac and enjoy the greater sound spectrum!
My point is, just because you can't see or hear something does not mean it is isn't there. Though that sounds a bit religious, for which I apologise.
Agreed. My heart sank when I saw my first ever link from Slashdot to the Sun. Yes I know, Slashdot is hardly the Acme of Journalism, but compared with The Sun...
Rupert Murdoch. Now there's a p**** for you.
Dammit, now maybe I'll get banned from Oz for life. Oh well.
Grr, when I visit sites like eweek.com, I really wish I had an "anti-bookmark" system so that if I ever attempt to go back there a dialog will pop up which says "These idiots screwed with the functionality of your back button last time you visited -- are you *sure* you really want to go there again?", and which defaults to "Heck, No".
Variables are only global within the program unit. The equivalent of a C function call, e.g. "CALL MODULE USING PARMS" allows local variable scope within MODULE.
If we are teaching history, then we should leave bloody religion out of it. And while I'm in rant mode, religion should not be treated as fact in schools. As with politics, children should be given an appreciation of the diversity of religions. They should not be taught that One Religion is the absolute truth, as this is clearly a lie.
They won't cut you off as such, but here in the UK, Demon Internet sell an "uncapped" service which has a "limit" of 50G per month before you are throttled back to 128kbps during daytime hours (Mon-Fri, 09:00-22:00). Annoying since the package is sold as having "no download limits" (technically correct, but weaselly). It's not the end of the world, since the throttle is removed overnight and at weekends, but it's a pain during business hours. And normal service is not restored until your rolling monthly average returns to within limits, and only then on an arbitrary date set for review, so it's possible to wait over a month for full speed to return. I'm able to monitor usage now (using IPcop), but it's very easy to hit the 50G limit (OK, I download the odd TV show), so am on the lookout for a better deal.

Cripes, reading this makes the US sound like the Land of the Free.

No point for you, obviously. Mind if the rest of us carry on without you?
Time to introduce cat 6
... to save the Tom Hanks movie.
Parsed & agreed. Not sure why this would offend anyone in the readership.
There needs to be skepticism. Doesn't really matter who suggests it.
... And I'm not even a grrl!

Seriously, give it a try if you haven't already.
Seconded. Maybe the timing is good for kids in the UK too.

Same reason. There are not enough consumers who care in order to put any kind of pressure on the music cartels.
"You" might ... "We" don't. And if you think there's no pressure on the distributors, which planet have you just arrived from?
Will quantum encryption be similarly trivial to crack?
Damn right. Mine's a disgrace. But think of the water I saved by not washing it since March.

Fit in
Sounds like half a solution to me. When will they fix the problem going backward?

Wankers.
Just take this to backslashdot.org pls. Thank you. Sheesh.

I hope you mean we should leave out proselytizing or favoring one religion over another
That is exactly what I meant, though I may not have been clear about that. Also agree with the remainder of your point.

I wish I had a memory for that kind of thing
Me too. Then I could use it for something useful.
