  5. Thats pretty sad on Is Early Exposure To Computers Good For Kids? · · Score: 1

I'm 15, and have had a computer in the house since I was 3 (Started out with packardbell 286 playing "prince of persia").
I bought my own first computer in the 7th grade (P.75 for 200$) but before then had constant access to my mom's.) In the 8th grade I acquired a pent.120, and as a Freshman built a p2.400.
Now as a Sophmore I am looking to Build a new one (probably T.Bird)
Now, I do have to admit I had someone to help me (My Uncle who was very into computers lived with us for a year after he got out of the Army)
but by the time I was 4 or 5 I could navigate myself around DOS.
By when I was 10 I was the one my mom turned to when the computer crashed and she needed help.
When I was 13, my Uncle got me into Linux (I can install it and compile Glide, but thats my extent so far).
Now at 15 I own 4 computers, ran a homenetwork last summer for my house, have a Freesco firewall set-up and running on our house network for road-runner Cable Access.
I constantly help my mom with her computer (I am planning to upgrade her to Win2000 this winter), I helped set-up almost all of the computers in the CAD lab at my school, my teachers know to come to me when they need help with their computers at school or work, and the dude who is a Senior who helps out with all the computers around the school (Tech-assistant) is as best as I can figure by the way he acts towards me, Either afraid or Jealous.
My suggestion for the kid is to somehow get them interested in it, such as, we'll by you the most exspensive computer you want, you just have to put it together ( and them give him a couple books on the subject), I do not know of any classes or anything for kids his age, but maybe I am wrong.
Maybe if you try to make it intersting for him he'll want to learn. But, perhaps he could be like my sister, and just like to play games, and call on me when it comes to something as simple as filling in a Username and password for setting up a yahoo account (and my mom got mad because I was upset that my 11 year old sister couldn't fill in a Username, password, date of birth, and press OK)

Also, It added in a ton of liks to my panels it didn;t ask permision too.
So I got mad, but decided to try out a theme for it, well, it just didn;t look like netscape!
So I went back to 4.76, and am happy with it.
Also, Netscape 6 took forever to load, whereas 4.xx loads in seconds, 6 takes about 30seconds on
    a pentium2 400mhz.
BTW, Why are Mozilla and Netscape looking almost like each other, I thought the point of Mozilla was to seperate from netscape!

  9. Dude, NewDeal Sucks on New Operating System For Developing Countries? · · Score: 2

I had to deal with NewDeal in my schools typing lab, and it was terrible.
I mean, I guess for a 286, it wasn't bad, but my schools computer guy was a lazy son-of-a-B*tch, and decided to charge my school 50$ (I think) a 486 to buy Newdeal Licences, even though nice little me had tryed to show him such things as AbiWord, Staroffice, and I even suggested running Linux on them and using KDE office or something. But no, the guy was a Dick and Put Newdeal on there, and both the typing teachers were ready to strangle him by months end. In the typing program, the spell-checker sucked, and it was so poorly written, it would continually crach on me.
Any way, my school sucks as far as computers go.
Such as when I was talking to one of the Seniors (this is a high-school) that was helping out with computer stuff, and I mentioned somehthing about that there servers were in the room acroast from the library, and he looked like he was ready to kill me when he told me that room was supposed to be secret (aswell as the Cat-5 witing plans), and I told him they should shut the door to it then, because I walk past there every day.
Also, when I mentioned to the tech guy about linux, he said he had "Tried it" and did not believe it was a good platform for the typing lab, when I asked him a few questions, it was apparent he was Lying, and was most likely afraid to try anything his MCSE didn't include.
But, he resigned last year, so now our "Tech director" is the dude who manages the money for the district, and all he does is change all the passwords once a month, and hire someone if a computer breaks down.
    Sorry bout my rant
