What movies would you like to lampoon if you had your choice of any movies out there ?

  2. EFX in NYC on Visual Effects Companies in NY and Elsewhere · · Score: 1

10 years ago I was working as a sound designer/sound editor at a commercial postproduction-editing house. We used to get these yellow books (The size was like a zagat restaurant guide maybe a bit longer. I would like to give you the name but unfortunately my copy was taken) that listed the addresses of every editing, special effects, lighting, audio, and equipment rental house in the city. When we needed effects work done we went over to R. Greenberg which was on west 39th street (they did the original effects for Predator and many other movies and commercials) I'm not sure if they are still in business, but its worth a try. It's important to understand that during that time only very large and successful companies could afford cutting edge digital equipment, now there are many more mom & pop effects houses out there. Also be prepared to start out as a messenger, most companies start people out that way than promote them internally to assistant editor or FX guy.

    Good Luck

  4. 2.2 install on OpenLinux 2.2 Released · · Score: 1

I was lucky enough to get a copy of 2.2 when Ransom Love came to speak at our LUG meeting in New York. I did however have some problems with the new graphical install(Lizard). After preparing my HD I booted from the CD and the install would hang while trying to probe my 2940UW. So I tried making a boot disk, which identified the SCSI card, but it couldn t properly identify the X-server for my graphics card(a Fire GL 1000 Pro), so I ended up using the plain ol terminal based install(Lisa) which worked fine but there was a problem in getting the mouse to initialize properly. After working that out which required a reboot before attempting to install the X-server, things seemed to work well. One of the biggest problems was that there was no documentation at all, which might of been of assistance in identifying the X- server properly. All and all it wasn t as smooth as I had hoped, but when I got it up and running it worked great.

  7. What is the best heat transfer compound ? on K6-3 on Monday · · Score: 1

I was pleased to find a nice glop of heat transfer compound on my K6-2 350 when I got my motherboard and CPU. Is there a type of compound or name brand that is better or has properties that are more desirable? If so I would definitely be interested on hearing opinions about this, seeing that this subject isn't talked about to much.

    Thanks

I hope they do it soon, one of the only reasons I still have to deal with windows is all of my sound apps. The Live is actually quite an excellent sound card for $200 and I look forward to the day when hard disk recording and sound design programs start to appear for Linux, They can definitely benefit from its inherent stability.

  10. a reasonable price on GIMP Book · · Score: 1

I think $40 to $45 would be fair prices for GUM, and I would definitely shell out the money for it, and so would others I suspect. There's no problem buying GUM because you're able to look at the electronic version first to see if it meets your needs. I also recently purchased the Blender manual, which after shipping ended up costing about $60, but it has to be the most beautiful manual (or coffee table book) I've ever seen. If you haven't checked it out get it, or find somebody who has a copy.
