Ask MST3k Creator Joel Hodgson

As turkey day approaches, we have the chance to ask Joel Hodgson whatever you can think of. If you've lived without electricity since the 80s, you might not be aware that he was the creator and original host of what may be the funniest show in history - Mystery Science Theater 3000, as well as the upcoming Cinematic Titanic. I've still got my fan club membership card even after nearly 2 decades. Standard Slashdot interview rules apply: ask your questions here, and we'll pass a bunch of the highest scoring ones for Joel to answer.

Honestly, while I know that it may represent something of an intrustion into the private lives of those involved, I really do feel that this question is a pertinent one. The thing about the MST environment is that it has always been a friendly one... as a viewer, the sense of community, not just amongst the fans but observable amongst the cast members as well, has been one of the truly unique and loveable things about the show. While so many sources of humor are based in anger or the pain of others, MST3K presented a wellspring of good-natured, likeable humor, and that has always been a large part of its appeal. Here are some genuinely clever, nice people who clearly love what they do, and they invite you to enjoy it with them. As such, we naturally want to know that those involved really do get along... we've read all the stories about the show's formation, and we know they've all been friends. When some cast members left the show we wished them well, because we understood that they wanted to move on. There's never been any intimation of animosity before, and it's naturally a little disturbing. I hope that Joel will choose to answer this one, simply because it's going to haunt fans if left to our imaginations and potentially cast a pall over both groups' projects. Though it is something of a personal question, we MSTies have been watching and laughing with these guys for a couple of decades now... we think of them as our friends, and we want to know if everything's alright.

The whole thing is so odd that it's naturally a little distressing. Mike neatly sidestepped the question in his MSNBC interview, as is his wont when asked personal things. Trace was asked recently what he thought of the whole Rifftrax idea, and he seemed somewhat surprised by the whole idea. Mary Jo is clearly close to both groups, so it's hard to believe there's any real dislike between them, to say nothing of Joel's appearance in the final season of MST. But then the Cinematic Titanic site's omisson of any acknowledgement at all of the Film Crew comes across as a little disingenuous... as though they're pretending not to know the other group exists. Personally, I thought it was just a question of who lives closer to each other, the Great Lakes group and the L.A. group, but with Mary Jo living in Minnesota, that idea seems to go out the window. And then there's Paul, about whom I've been wondering for years, who seems to have signed on with Jim Mallon's bizarre and vaguely inappropriate-seeming site. It feels oppresively like there's something no-one wants to say. All I want to know is, does everyone get along? Does there have to be some kind of rivalry between them? Some acknowledgement of the issue would really put the fans at ease, I think, so we can all enjoy the riffing.

MST3K movies were would choose to leave their work to congeal in obscurity when they could sell thousands more copies of it, but IP is all about control you know.

Robert Fiveson, the director of "Parts: The Clonus Horror" which appeared in MST3K Volume 12 Set was smart about it appeared in an interview clip on the DVD. He said he'd originally realized that while MST3K would certainly mock his movie, which despite its low budget and cheesy production was actually a decent movie, so decent it was totally ripped off to create the recent "The Island" directed by Michael Bay. Fiveson went on to say that he received tremendous support from the MST3K fanbase when he pursued a lawsuit against the makers of "The Island", which ended in a settlement, IIRC. Fiveson said he's very glad to have been associated with the show.

All that said, however, there are still a large number of unreleased episodes of the show based on movies whose copyrights have lapsed or are otherwise in the public domain, and here's hoping Jim Mallon and everyone else in a position to do so will work with Rhino to continue these quality releases of the best TV show ever.

Expensive or not, I'm more than happy to support Best Brains and everyone who made this wonderful treasure of TV. Yes, that means I'd bought them all on VHS originally, but I think all those have subsequently been re-released by Rhino, and sadly, the rights have expired again on some movies meaning they can no longer sell Volumes 1 and 10 (I think those are the two).

For Time Chasers, Mike opens up saying that they invited the original cast to see the movie together with them. I guess they thought it was going to be more friendly ... than it was. There were many low blows at acting quality, how people looked, how they talked, the music for the movie, the region it was filmed in, the list goes on. You can find considerable material on that movie including that the camera had no sound function and couldn't hold more than 60 seconds worth of film which resulted in many cuts and bad editing and three people doing the voices. The film crew was not allowed to do anything artsy and soon dubbed the production "Mangos: Cans of Fruit." The unfortunate story of Torgo is that he was supposed to look like a Satyr but instead put the metal leg inserts in backwards (supposed to make his legs look like that of a goat's) and, as a result, had hilariously large knees. This caused him great pain and, whether he was addicted to pain killers or shamed from the movie I can't say, but he committed suicide shortly there after. Rest in peace, Torgo. Cut the guy some slack here, Joel hasn't any fine control over Rhino's business.

You need to consider a couple of factors like Niche market DVD vendors being lying weasels who can't compete on the level of say a big budget hollywood action-porn for distribution. And the fact that the nitch market has way lower margins then bulk retailers to being with. I used to own a record store, the reason for the prices was mostly scarcity. Your coming up against that and thats why someone is selling on ebay for $250.

Rhino isn't as big as they once were. Given the state of production I doubt they are going to reissue it anytime soon. The only thing he could do was void the contract (maybe) or give them reason to reissue. I would suspect that this project is a good a reason as any. Joel has talent, it's nice to see him swinging again. Well have to wait for digital downloads once the they (Rhino) figure out how.
