Take a look at GOOGs price the day before the news broke. It was already on the decline in high volume (almost as high as after the news broke)...insider trading.
the move into the living room started with Airport Express. it lets you stream lossless music to your stereo. There are rumors of a new version of it that has video out. that eliminates the need for a silly Media Center PC in the living room.
DVD resolution is 720 x 480. Common HDTV resolutions are 1280 x 720 (720p) and 1920 x 1080 (1080i). Standard Definition (aka 4:3 old TV NTSC) is 640 x 480 interlaced I believe. quite a difference!
..a hybrid might be better for independent smaller groups to distribute stuff.
I've looked at BitTorrent and haven't found this feature, which could be of use to me and hopefully others. I've been dealing with distributing Creative Commons licensed music, and have used BT very successfully. Obviously, BT is great for saving bandwidth costs and these types of musicians don't usually have the cash to pay for tons of downloads themselves.
This becomes a problem though if the last seed goes down (computer gets turned off etc), and there are only unfinished downloads by peers. If there were a way to specify a subsitute or alternate URL that would only be used in case of emergency when all the P2P seeds are down, it would save on bandwidth costs but also allow for a backup to turn an unfinished peer into a seeder. Then once their was a 100% seeder, the alternate URL would not need to be used, only the new seeder.
This makes BT a bit of a P2P hybrid with plain http or ftp URLs. Instead of having a.torrent link on a page and direct download links to mp3s (or whatever), there could just be a.torrent, encouraging people to share bandwidth but there would be a backup plan if no full seeders exist. It would use P2P bandwidth when possible, but have something to fall back on.
There could also be multiple alternate URLs, basically a listing of mirrors. Would be really helpful in my experience for artists spreading their music & hopefully sharing large Linux ISOs (by using a bit from each mirror & not choking one, along w/ P2P).
As someone noted, Choicepoint/Database Technologies are the guys who were paid to scrub Felons from the Florida list of eligible voters before the 2000 & 2004 elections. If you live here you read about em in the papers constantly for shady activity, & they were in a few documentaries about the elections. They were paid an insane amount of money ($4 million no bid contract, see Jeb Bush, FL governor) for what they did, and did a horrible job in return. A few of the problems were they only matched parts of names, not whole names, gender, race, etc...so a black guy w/ a partial name match to a white felon would be unable to vote. This ended up disenfranchising thousands of black voters (frequently democrats) in the 2000 election where Bush only won by 500-600 votes in the state, which led to him winning the election.
get into iTunes. don't get me wrong, its clunky, but it is really nice. I'm in the process of doing this. check out Airport express with analog or optical outputs, hook it up to your stereo. then on one of your computers, you leave iTunes running. throw in a 400 GB drive for $200 & start encoding CDs & vinyl to Apple Lossless, you'll be able to store most of the music you need instant access to w/ no loss of quality like mp3 (you can convert Apple Lossless to aiff/wav/aac/mp3 for portable use). you could use the laptops to terminal in, but you don't really need em, there are remote controls.
I'm sure a non graphical mode would use less resources, but usually no one is logged onto a server machine locally, and it just shows a logon screen...nothing too intensive.
I was indecisive for a few months on getting a new TV. We're at the start of a transition. The 36" & 40" CRTs are probably the best pictures I've seen..but they are massive, and 4:3.
If you watch lots of TV on lots of different channels (most will be in 4:3), then get one of those, or even just buy a $200 27" CRT. cos in a few years HDTV will be phased in.
If you watch mostly network TV, or the other HDTV channels (ESPN, Discovery, HBO & movie channels, we only get about 15 here now out of a few hundred regular ones) or mostly movies, then get a HDTV now! The sports stuff (mainly football) looks completely amazing. & newer movies (unfortunately only big studio ones) will blow you away. Sopranos in HD will definitely have people flocking to your house too.
Most of the cable channels are NOT HD/16:9 (at least here): Cartoon Network, Comedy Central, CNN, IFC, Sundance, all other HBOs except for main one, History. This leads to a stretched picture, or bars on the side to keep it 4:3. this is the suck part I mentioned earlier.
With Netflix tho, I watch a movie a night & you gotta have widescreen, unfortunately the largest 16:9 CRT TV I've seen was 30-33", which might be ok for a small bedroom but its really super tiny screen.
I personally like the LCD projection ones, 42", 50", 60"..less than half the price of HDTV plasma (EDTV plasma is lower resolution), not as thin but lots thinner than other projections of the same size...so not cheap, but affordable for home theater types.
except you just take votes, only a handful out of every thousand. Kinda like in Office Space (or Superman 3). obviously, too much one way would be suspicious.
Is this being paranoid? maybe, but Diebold doesn't exactly inspire trust. they could stop all complaints by opening up their machines for independent review & allowing a paper trail (without which their can be no real recounts).
he's a self proclaimed war president. who doesn't like war? especially pre-emptive offensive ones, where many innocents & soldiers are dying. but it was a war on the concept of 'terror.' well at least the first country, Afghanistan, was involved. luckily, he kept up an atmosphere of fear & had the country terrified.
USA PATRIOT Act. I had too many Constitutional rights, freedoms, & liberties. I can spare a few, can't you? whatever idiot* said 'Those who would give up essential liberty for temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.' probably had no experience. The ACLU can't even discuss their case against the gov ABOUT the USA PATRIOT Act. no one will deny, thats pretty awesome!
Attorney General Ashcroft. I don't even feel like bringing up legit reasons like covering boobs on statues OF the personification of Justice. (the turn on almost caused me to rape.) crisco, anyone?
I don't like people to express opinions if they are different from my own. even if they do it peacefully & respectfully. of course, I am assuming those in power will always hold the same views as I do. Love America, Hate Bush
you mean something like the recent FTAA (Free Trade) conference in Miami? or all those illegally detained at the Republican convention in nyc.
Uploading the photos before police shoot bean bag bullets above your eye would be nice. Did anybody see that horrible video? Carl Kesser's story, or GIS his name.
Here in Fort Lauderdale we have digital cable HDTV. Channel surfing is faster than old cable. Quality on regular channels is ok, but its stretched to 16:9 - this is probably more annoying than the vertical bars on the side to keep non-HDTV channels as 4:3, but less frustrating to an old man who paid lots for a 60" Sony LCD to see the empty bars. The quality of the TV picture is lots better too so non-HDTV looks slightly dodgy.
New shows (new Leno, NFL, HBO movies) look better than DVD, since on HDTV they're 1080i & 5.1 surround.
For one thing, HD is pretty niche still. Its far from common, even in metropolitan areas. I certainly didn't know anyone who had it in 98, I only know one now in 2004.
looking at certain sites, there are tons of HDTV shows up for d/l, at around 350 megs for a 50ish minute show. thats totally doable now on broadband. I know plenty of people who have HBO but will d/l a show if they're out that night. Sopranos, Deadwood, Curb, Ali G, & I would think anything else new would be in HD. its the only tv worth watching.
Justablip is an indie electronic music label started by Kris Weston from the Orb. we release music under an 'open source'-like license & encourage people to share the music via p2p (or however they wish)...we also use Ogg, FLAC, & bittorrent.
The major problems of getting Scripture to the masses involved widespread illiteracy and the fact that, until the invention of the printing press, Bibles couldn't be easily copied and distributed.
Well, wasn't it only at Vatican II (1962? or 1959?) that the Roman Catholics switched over to the vernacular from Latin? Thats quite a lag. I think there were a few people reading in English (& other non-Latin languages) that it might have been warranted a little earlier.

this is a perfect time to mention justablip recordings, a new music label based in London. blip has been started by Thrash (Kris Weston), formerly of the Orb. it has been formed over his problems with the music industry & frustrations w/ large corporations that fund death & strangle your rights. Justablip music (electronic/experimental/washingmachinesexmusic) will be released under a free license (as yet undetermined).
anyways, check out some of the articles that Thrash has written & see where he's coming from. there are no releases available for download, but they should be shortly, I think the first release may be a poke at Madonna that most people on here will enjoy. sign up at the website too.
I've a lazy floridian that got my ass out to vote today...
I've been apathetic towards politics my whole life. I think we really need a massive change, not just 2 or 3 parties to choose from (it was nice seeing the independents on the ballot w/ "NO PARTY"...aww, they have no party, it sounds sad). I think something radical (as dumb as that sounds) needs to happen.
BUT, I really dislike Bush. I haven't heard an intelligent person vouch for him. I mean, despite all his blatant lies (both candidates), wouldn't you at least pick the one who would make a fool of himself (& your country, as he is a figurehead) less? (Don't get me wrong, I like to laugh too, excellent fodder for Dave, Conan, etc...) WBush's whole life, it seems he's just been handed stuff, & gotten away w/ it when he didn't earn it.
I doubt the DemocRATS would have gotten this many votes if they had 3 DUI's between them (1 for Bush, 2 for Cheney).
oh yeah, survival of the fittest/luckiest. but don't worry now, dead species, we'll bring you back even tho you didn't quite cut it the first time.
honestly, is there anything dead we can't live w/o? aren't there enough not-extinct-yet babies starving? I'd rather see them fed than an anachronism in a zoo. I mean, we're not quite star trek IV yet, are we?
