I wonder why the/. editors are telling us to "Just hit Kernel.org" when everyone SHOULD use the mirrors.
Wait a few hours for the changes to propogate, then find a local mirror at http://kernel.org/mirrors/. It helps everyone: Kernel.org still has bandwidth, and you get faster download speeds!
If you ever walk around in a Florida city with cameras, wear a clear plastic bag around your head. If they identify you, sue them under the DMCA for circumvention of an encryption device (the plastic bag).
I'm amazed that the RIAA is so stupid. Once consumers hear that CDs are intentionally deformed to prevent loss of profits, I'll bet that more will instead download MP3s.
I know that's what I'm doing. Out of all the CDs I've bought recently, the Oar CD is the only one that ripped correctly.
Please, Slashdot posters, before you post, at least get the facts right! And BTW, there is no such thing as the "DCMA"--it's the "DMCA", which stands for "Digital Millenium Copyright Act".
Apparently, someone got their hands on some leaked documents that reveal astronauts having to deal with dozens of irritating problems aboard the International Space Station.
Is it just me, or is something very *WRONG* with that? Speaking from a purely USian standpoint, I pay taxes. I'd like to know what my taxes are paying for, and if the things they paid for are actually working out. The US government is Of the people, by the people, for the people. Why is our government keeping secrets from us?
I may be completely crazy, but our government is for US, the PEOPLE. I feel like I should know if OUR projects aren't doing to well.
I have an Inspiron 4000 from Dell too, and used to have RH7.1 on it. I'm just wondering if, when you suspended it, and it woke up, was the screen all weird? Also, could you ever get it to write all the RAM to disk and shut down like Win2k's hibernation? If you can, please email me telling me how:).
While I do like Ruby, it doesn't have the support behind it that Python does. Thats why I use Python, and not Ruby.
I think the person who sent in this story was asking why Ruby doesn't have the the support behind it that other languages do.
I'm a PHP and Perl person myself, and they are perfectly adequate. If there was a well-written, non-biased article outlining why Ruby would benefit me, I might consider it. But as of now, I've only heard of it...I know nothing else, and have no desire to learn anything about it.
This will have a much larger affect than "just" letting 115,000 people have a great job in the US. Sure, the US will eventually destroy itself due to its popularity, and things like the IIT review and the MPAA case make it not 100% kosher.
But think of all the people who are used to being paid less than US minimum wage for "offshore" outsourcing companies like those in India. About a month ago there was a "Should I outsource?" Ask Slashdot question and I was (for lack of a better word) interested in the treatment of these offshore high-tech workers. I did a bit more research and found that just about all of these extremely talented people (mostly in India) were getting paid $2USD or less an hour, on average. For tasks that would get $100USD/hr in the States.
I hope that tens of thousands of people will find a new life that pays well in the US because of this bill.

That post could also be from someone who wanted to make you think he was still astroturfing...just a thought.
I clicked on the link when there were 0 comments on this story, yet it is completely unreachable.

True, but this is an English website. Wouldn't it be a bit odd if the New York Times published an article in Chinese?
I speak a tiny bit of French, so I could understand what they were saying, but it just struck me as very odd...
And no, it wasn't a Google translation. It was just a straight link.

Hey! Wanna see some of MSNBC's ASP code? Just overload the site so it produces errors and prints out the .inc filename. :)

I really wish that instead of building better wireless LANs, companies would work harder to bring fast Internet access to homes.
