Those checkboxes are usually worded as "I don't not want to be not subscribed to a mailing list that doesn't contain information about non-offers that I am not interested in from unselected partners who have no affiliation to you."
I'll likely install JunkBuster or something similar. As someone posted on another thread, it's *my* right to choose what's displayed on *my* computer, and if I don't want to see ads, I won't.
You're simply being unfair. It's your right to choose what's displayed on your monitor, but there are certain rules of ethics that you should follow. Nothing is free. Taco and company have to PAY for these resources. You're using them up for free.
Come on now! Be fair. If you take from Slashdot, give back. It's as simple as that.
Maybe it's to foster the growth of the Internet in Ghana?
Imagine how much richer the Internet would be with a whole new set of opinions from Africans and members of other countries that are currently too poor to offer their citizens the Internet.
Not everyone in Africa is starving, some live like "normal" people. The Internet might just bring in commerce to end the starvation in Africa, too.
If Blizzard doesn't have the backbone to say to Vivendi "Hey, no, that's not right," then it's their fault too. Someone would have had to alert Vivendi about bnetd, too, and it'd probably be Blizzard themselves.
bnetd was a lifesaver for me. Battle.net wouldn't work with my LAN setups so when I wanted to play with friends, one of them set up a bnetd. Thank you for all you've done, whoever wrote it.
But on to the topic of Blizzard. They're soon to be releasing Warcraft III, and the Slashdot audience is going to be a major market for them. I think we should steer away from any of their products until they withdraw this complaint and compensate/apologize.
So: when you see Warcraft III on the shelves, don't buy it. Buy Castle Wolfenstein or whatever, just don't buy products from a company who is against our rights on the net.
** Grammar Lesson **
There's a huge difference between "copywritten" and "copyrighted." "Copy," in these words, means two different things.
In "copywritten," it means text. For example, the text in a magazine advertisement can be called ad copy.
However, in "copyrighted," the copy refers to duplication. A copyright is a right to copy.
Someone who writes copy is called a copywriter. Therefore, copywritten would refer to text written by a copywriter, NOT copyrighted property.
Sorry for the lesson, but I've been seeing it a lot and thought I should do something.:)
They actually did something, unlike most companies

AvantGo Gets a Patent
·
· Score: 4, Informative
I'm completely against silly software patents, like the 1-click one, but I think that AvantGo deserves this one.
If you've ever used AvantGo, you know that it's an incredible system. They deserve this patent! Clearly, they worked hard on their idea, it wasn't stolen from someone else or obvious.
This patent only covers server->handheld synchronization, not server->client sync (it's not overly broad). It won't make the whole Internet infringing.:)
This isn't a patent on a simple algorithm or something really simple, it's a patent on a complicated method (as opposed to most software patents). It obviously took a lot of work to perfect this idea, and the way our current IP system works, we let the inventors keep the right to their inventions. Whether or not you agree with our IP system, it's the way it works over here, and they deserve the patent.
Rob (CmdrTaco) has always said that if you come up with a better design, email him and he'll put it up if he thinks it's worthy. So instead of complaining, go redesign Slashdot yourself!
It would sure be a cool thing to be able to say you designed Slashdot.:)
Kids ( 18) don't get hurt by the Internet; they don't get hurt when they see the F-word, when they see graphic descriptions of violence, and they don't get hurt when they see porn. That's why your analogy is incorrect...kids out on the street can actually get hurt (depending on the neighborhood) or cause crime, while kids on the Internet are safe.
While I'm against it, parents do have a choice of whether or not to monitor their own kids. However, banning ALL kids from using the Internet unattended would be terrible. Why?
First, as you say, the Internet wasn't made to be used only by kids. Likewise, it wasn't made just to be used by adults. Kids have contributed content and server resources, too!
Second, you keep implying that kids are somehow hurt by the Internet. Not true -- the only studies which claim that are religious ones, usually who believe porn is the root of all evil.
I understand that these new laws make it hard for adults to use the Internet, but wouldn't it be better just to fight them instead of take away the Internet from all kids (never mind how THAT would work...how can you make sure that no kids will access the Internet, in every country?)? This is a horrible law -- agreed -- but the way to make the world better isn't to deal with it and block kids from the Internet, it's to fight it.
Most importantly, however, how will our children become productive members of our society if they are blocked from any "adult" discussion until they're 18?
Porn sites WANT to discourage minors from visiting. Why? They won't make any money off them (unless their parents check the history:) ), they just waste bandwidth.
If they could make it harder for minors to visit their site, they would save lots of money in bandwidth. That's why adult site operators are supporters of filters.
But there's one difference. Judges deal with confidential court materials that their superiors are not necessarily entitled to. Most employees don't have access to confidential information, or the whole company knows the information.
The American-based retailer has 11 outlets in the UK, including stores in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Only UK stores are participating in the SmartFace pilot.
So I guess it's time for us Americans to tell our local Borders that we don't want this "technology" in our stores.

You make a good point, but you should still choose the mirror nearest you. If you're in Saudi Arabia and you download the latest kernel from kernel.org, it is not only going to be much slower for yourself but it will also cause needless international Internet traffic.

For the record, I was speaking with sarcasm too. That's why I said "normal" in quotes. I'm not THAT prejudiced. :)

OK, put your mouse over the submitter's name (Keith). The link is to Icrontic.com. But that's also the site he points us to in his post.
I wish the Slashdot editors would check to see that the story isn't just spam, promoting the poster's site.
