fwiw, this was basicly done on an episode of "barney miller" twenty-some years ago.

the mechanics can be solved with well placed bungee cords. advantages: no ones arm goes to sleep; no wet spot (just a blob undulating in the direction of the air scrubber).

i wasn't wondering about mechanical wear so much as how hard it is to steer. with that much ground contact, if you're standing still, i bet it's real interesting moving the steering wheel. i'd hate to try parallel parking.

    cheers

  4. Re:So now your truck can spin in place? on Got Tracks? · · Score: 2
you can only spin in place on tracks when the left and right sides have independant drive. you can do that with wheels, too. one side goes forward as the other reverses. that's also how they reduce the turning radius of ships with twin screws.

the reason for tracks is they handle more severe terrain and they don't go flat. climbing over an object you don't loose drive because a wheel has passed over the top. and you don't want to get out and change a flat under enemy fire. unless you're on an episode of M*A*S*H.

and i suspect these cost way more than a lift kit and tires.

    cheers.

because in american culture violence is good and sex is bad. period. (most ausies are so happy they got the convicts and we got the puritans.) and there's something about the vaguest possibility of it involving children which throws people into a tizzy. think back to the witch hunts and ruined lives of people prosecuted for child molestation in the eighties, many of the high profile convictions of which were overturned in the nineties. ironically, a lot of the overturned convictions invovled a crusading prosecutor from florida named reno.

Yes, they're still made with alternating layers of clay and metal.

    what?!

    clay in a sword? no.

damascus type blades are made by either alternating layers of high and low carbon steel, or layers of steel and some other metal, which are then hammered and folded repeatedly. (this isn't taking into account wire damascus, which is made by hammering wire rope).

japanese blades are typiclly folded more than damascus, to create more layers.

the clay used when making a japanese blade coats it during heat treating as insulation to create a differential temper. the edge is hard and will stay sharp. the back of the blade is softer and will flex to keep the blade from breaking.
