  1. Move again? on The Joys Of Big Business; or Why AT&T Long Distance Sux · · Score: 1

    Heh, just kidding....
I live in NJ. Bell Atlantic/Verizon is my provider. For LD, I use AT&T. Works alright, since I rarely make LD calls.
I'd file a complaint with the Consumer Protection Agency or the Better Business Bureau, if they really got under my skin... other than that, most of the time I can't be bothered with little things like paying 1 or 2 cents more/min.

  2. Sorry, subject should read "older than 12..." on Final Fantasy: The Movie · · Score: 1

damn the boss walking on me during preview post...*sigh*

  3. Finally, a CG movie that appeals to people 12... on Final Fantasy: The Movie · · Score: 1

Sorry, folks... but regardless of the technical merits of the Toy Story series, they were just a bit corny. Same with Ants.
I've been a fan of the Final Fantasy series for some time, and the last few releases for the PSX (VII, VIII, FF Tactics) had some amazing CG scenes... Finally, here's a movie that seems pretty appealing to adults and kids alike, yet light-years ahead of movies like Titan AE and Dinosaurs... sweet. I can barely wait for it to come out.

Nothing neater than a 64-bit environment emulator running on 32-bit boxes.... Hurrah for progress!!! =)

  5. Flat rates, please... on Why Not To Meter Internet Access · · Score: 1

Who decides what a 'heavy user' might be? A 'light user' could be someone that logs in once in a while to check their mail, but as time goes by, everyone will be using the 'net for *everything*, bringing everyone into the category of the 'heavy users'. Then what?
I'm sorry, but this is not right. Everyone pays for their access; keep these kinds of fees at the ISP level, and do not burden the end users with additional taxes/costs/etc. If you are the type of person that transfers gigabytes/month, then your ISP should be putting a bandwith cap on your connection, or you should be forced to pay for dedicated access (like some of us already do). Just because joe shmoe doesn't want to pay $19.95/month for his AOL thingy, doesn't mean that bill shmoe should pay $39.95/month because he happens to run a website with moderate traffic.

  6. Software and hardware-based encryption... on Judge Thinks Delete Should Mean Delete · · Score: 2

He does raise a interesting point. Why can't we safely delete unwanted files and not have them come bite us later on?
Well, actually, we can. There are several companies out there that provide software and hardware-based data encryption solutions. If privacy and sigil are so paramount to us, we can use any of these to insure our deleted items stay deleted. For example, among these encryption packages, pgp.com has several useful utilities that will 'shred' your free diskspace, to prevent data recovey on Windows environments. A simple google search also yelds rought 34k matches for filesystem encryption under linux and other OSes.
Bear in mind that although you have the right to privacy, when you're working for someone, the fine print often says that anything you write/save/delete/is_on_hard_drive_of_computer_use d is their property. They have the 'right' to examine it and do with it as they please.
I doubt there will be any mainstream OSes with built-in file and filesystem encryption enbled by default, since it would make many people unconfortable. God help us all ;)

  7. The Pilot is a great piece... on Will Linux Ever be Ported to the Palm? · · Score: 1

.. but linux (with all its great progress) is not quite there yet. Although there have been some great efforts to port linux to some of the handhelds out there, like the Ipaq, there aren't that many reasons why one should go apenuts to get linux on the palm. Forgive me, I'm more interested in actual functionality as opposed to raw 'coolness'. =)
Maybe in a year or two, we'll have one (or more) handheld-centric distribution that will rock our socks and will be worth every penny, but until then, I'll sit back and relax...
One of the cool things though... There is a linux port to the Psion handhelds, which seems really good... I may drop it on my 5mx someday, when it outlives its usefulness... heh

  8. Something more important than the name... on Sony To Release New Pet Robot By Year's End · · Score: 1
Will it be another 'pet' that will cost $1200? It'd be neat if SONY could make them a little more affordable.... there's only so much I will spend on toys, and that much for a single chunk of cheap plastic seems to be just a little high..
