  1. Re:More BS on FCC And More HDTV Rules · · Score: 1

Seeing that the HDTV signal is supposedly going to be handled by the DirectTv service, I do not have to worry about the crap that the local cable companies try to pull off. Now what defines a moron? According to Merriam Webster, a moron is, "a very stupid person." I would have to reconsider this definition to include a person who is uninformed as well. Now to the other person that stated that I was "ninth" well, when I wrote the line I did, there were no posts. Obviously, these slashdot memebers are truly morons. As they have nothing to contribute to the community, but either goat sex links, or comments about being the first post. dave

First off, thanks for the intelligent response. It wasn't the typical "M$ sux" mentallity. Why must it be a non-profit? Granted, he lives in Canada and is not in capitilistic US, he is entitled, in my opinion, to earn whatever he can. I like the idea of donating to the cause. The cause being, a secure OS. What would we gain other than a tax benefit to making it a non-profit? From a business point, this is US based,if I give him a check it is an expense. If I give him hardware, it is an expense. So I do get some tax relief. As I stated, I like the software, I think the value is worth it. BTW, I do like the Tshirts as well :) Dave

Damn, you seem to want to know how much the guy makes. In my opinion, it's none of your business. Sure you can get software for free, but I bet the majority of people would not mind paying for something of value. To me, $30 for the cd is worth every penny. Getting Linux for free is an option, but you do get what you pay for. I have no problem whatsoever with people making a living. He is not raping customers, he is living his life producing software that some people do not mind spending money on. For the fair disclosure, I do run 2 Linux boxes, 2 OBSD boxes, 1 BSDi box and a half dozen W2K boxes.

  6. Piracy tool on TiVo Changing Privacy Policy? · · Score: 1

Seeing that Hughes (which owns DirectTV) has been going after pirates very hard, this could be a very easy way to help track them. For those who do not know, DirectTV uses a smart card and a phone line for their system. The phone line sends orders in for PPV and features. Well, the pirates have decided to modify the smart cards and not connect the phone. Now let's see. Hmmm. If I had a pirated dish with a TIVO on it, and I d/l'd the TIVO service and it tracked my watching habits. Hey....It just caught me watching something that I wasn't supposed to be able to watch... Who does not think that these two companies will not share that kind of information. My 2cents worth.
