So is it OK for kids to be able to surf anywhere on the net? Many kids are surfing now and getting a real education from some of those sites. Do parents have the right to control the stuff that flows into their computers(or TVs)?
Most people seem to want to push for software filters. Many politicians want to force libraries to add filters. It might happen since libraries take a lot of federal money. It has been a common belief here on slashdot that software filters are bad because they censor things that should be OK for kids to see. They don't seem to work on the real porn very well either.
A XXX TLD would allow simple filtering and allow the people who want the porn to find it easy! Where is the slippery slope? Pictures of intercourse and genitalia are pornography! Pictures of nudes are not, but we can have a ADU TLD for that and the breast cancer stuff.

It took years for those people to realize that a GPL license made no sense if you needed a close proprietary tool kit to build it. We have a well justified reason for avoiding closed proprietary software. You are the one who has the problem.
Why is it on Slashdot that many of the same people who think its okay to break copyright laws in cases of emulation, 'free' music and abadonware are the same people who would scream the loudest if a company were to run afoul of the GPL?... Take it or leave it.

Your saying that if we use copyright law to protect our software, we're suddenly not allowed to criticize it? Do you think that 200 years is a bit extreme for a copyright? Do you believe that a 200 year copyright would benefit a writer/programmer or would it really just benefit corporations who own 70 year old cartoon characters?
Microsoft loves the idea of having different platforms for their flagship products. So much so that when Compaq pull out of the Win2k Alpha race (they were paying for it!) Microsoft had a fit. After a few months Microsoft convinced Compaq to continue (money?).
Besides Microsoft has to change just a few things and then write a new HAL. Windows NT was even developed for a RISC chip initially (MIPS?) and was ported to x86.
...how long will they be on top? Once the P4 is released in sufficient numbers, the Athlon family will go right back down.

When I first heard of of Mozilla I was under the impression that it was trying to fix all of NS's mistakes (a big one being bloat) and to be open source. It seems to have missed the first goal by a large margin (I can get versions of IE 5 that are smaller than the windows version), but the second is still there.

Bloat is an easy word to throw around. The biggest a Netscape down load ever was about 17 Megs. Is that bloated? Quake was 25 Megs, Quake II was 400 Megs and Quake III bigger! Is Windows 2000 more bloated then Windows ME? Wow! what a piece of bloat that Win2k is!
I guess it depends on what it does eh? But you find that since there is a version of IE for windows that's smaller than Netscapes, Netscape is doing something wrong. Are you sure your not looking at the service pack for IE and not IE?
Just the fact that we are talking about OSS here means that it's succeeding.
