Have you heard of multiple desktops? Lots of X window managers implement this. You could dedicate a separate desktop to gdesklets with weather, hd space, etc etc. and switch to it when needed, then when you're done looking, switch back to your main desktop and continue on with your work.
OK, this whole 'X is just a knockoff of Y' thing has got to stop. If you're trying to prove that you're clever by mentioning an older product, then kudos to you, but you're just wasting space. EVERYTHING NEW COPIES SOMETHING THAT'S BEEN DONE BEFORE! Linux is just a knockoff of UNIX, Mac OS is just a knockoff of Xerox GUI, Pepsi is a knockoff of Coca-Cola. The one thing you should be worried about is if it's useful to you and makes you more productive. Some people on here think its useless eyecandy, others think it's useful in displaying their hard drive space, wireless signal, the weather outside (hey I'm trapped in a 20 story building for most of the day, I'd like to know how it is outside!)
I have a lot of problems with Mac OS X and SMB. OS X likes to litter samba directories with.DS_Store files. The network browser could use some work, too. And don't even think about not unmounting your samba shares from work when you take your laptop home. You'll get a 10 minute hang of the whole GUI.
okay.. everyone knows you need to use Quark for your business.. this is barely a 1.0 release, it's not going to take over the desktop publishing world today!
Aqua apps clash with brushed metal apps. simple as that. Either they should stick with everything Aqua or brushed metal. Too bad it's heading towards brushed metal cause in my opinion it's ugly.
Anyone else find it funny that a Mozilla related app looks more like an Apple app than Apple's own browser? I guess if you dig brushed metal then it's alright, but boy do the iApps clash with the regular Aqua apps.
Use workspaces. There's a load of work of workspace manager programs for Windows, even. I have a workspace dedicated to AIM with a tabbed conversation window already open so I don't get IM's that steal focus from whatever else I'm working on.
I've never used the --force or --nodeps options while installing RPMS and rpm just hung. And these were rpms from the RedHat cds! This bug has been around since RedHat8 and still not fixed! No, you shouldn't have to kill the rpm pid and rm some database files anytime you want to install a new rpm.
Mmm.. I wouldn't say Miguel is an opportunist using Free Software to make a quick buck. He used to work on Sparc Linux a long time ago. Plus Ximian hires a lot of GNOME hackers.
You also don't know anything about GNOME themes. A GNOME theme includes a GTK & Metacity and Icon theme for *consistency*.
I say get off your high horse and enjoy the Free Software Ximian provides.
Don't know too much about Debian PPC (just too much hassle to setup on PPC..), but I did try out YDL 3.0 on my iBook 700mhz and it went to sleep when I closed the lid after 3 seconds and it resumed alright (even with X loaded).
The battery life was around 3hours, Mac OS X I get 3:50 minutes max. Also got about 900fps using glxgears by enabling DRI.
I really really like my iBook (700mhz) and Mac OS X, but I have to say that the left underside of the laptop gets mighty hot after an hour or so. This is probably a hard drive cooling problem, but still.
If you don't care, don't use it. People above have given you the reasons why KDE and X were delayed. Even then, it was easy to find and add a deb line to apt-get them. I guess Debian wasn't meant for you.
Sawfish as the default window manager and the Mac-like menubar were the defaults with RedHat 7. something.. which came out 2 years ago. RedHat 9 only has one bottom GNOME panel by default. Also, the menus are arranged nicely and Bluecurve is a nice looking theme.
umm. why the need to bash Debian like that? I maintain three mail, dns, web, database servers where I work and all running Debian Woody with close to 2 years uptime. Running the latest, greatest software on these computers wouldn't be the smartest thing to do. Plus, Debian has security updates all the time.
why? it was a public server, right?
You should think of something new to complain about instead of the GTK file dialog. It's being rewritten as we type away for the GTK 2.4 release.
To me, it is not hideous, just really really basic.

If you don't like it, don't use. Why even bother commenting in the first place??
you can change the window button order in Metacity through gconf-editor. The key to change is documented, too.
I have mine set as minimize, maximize, title, close.
uh yeah.. how did you come to this scientific conclusion Mr. Anonymous Coward?

I'm sure Panther will fix all this, though.

a new file selector is coming along with gtk 2.4... this has been discussed to death already.
wow.. don't go overboard on the details, buddy.

the Ximian packages have more polish and include their patches (Debian ships vanilla GNOME)
Might wanna watch out if you have an Nvidia video chipset though..kind of flaky. I forgot which PowerBook models have Nvidia or ATI.
Anyways, use KDE if you want lots of features, or GNOME is you want to keep things simple but without as many features (some would say bloat) as KDE.

uh yeah, I thought we were talking about Debian, Linux here d8)
How pathetic I am replying to an A/C!
Nah, I work at an ISP Mr. A/C. There's also the mix of Solaris, Windows 2000 servers and of course Cisco routers.
:-)
I really don't have to worry about the Debian servers at all.
