  1. Re:Is Microsoft at all relevant anymore? on Microsoft Verdict Vacated · · Score: 2

All that coupled with the relatively few updates and minimal enthusiasm among developers other than "gee that looks like cool technology" is contributing to be's downfall. Be is pretty skin deep imo. I have used it and got over running 4 instances of a media player and an opengl tech display all at once, yippy what else can it do. Those things are great but how practical is any of it? People selling something inferior to Gimp (which aint exactly photoshop) on bebits dosent exactly help the application base grow, selling trivial apps isn't going to help. I don't care if it take's me 5 minutes to sum up be because that's all one needs, when I consulted a be group on irc i was met with elitest attitudes about the chipset of my motherboard. I promptly installed another OS which was a bit more agnostic towards which hardware I could or could not use. They really need to "disclose" about now because things aren't exactly looking up as they say. Up an impressive 1 cent today, they may yet have life in them however this dosen't leave much time to actively develop Beos and Beia there just isn't room to be mediocre anymore. We've learned that hype and potential mean squat, what you deliver and at what cost is pretty important. "According to the Nasdaq's regulations, a company can be de-listed if its stock languishes too long under $1. Or $5, depending on the company's qualifications when it listed." Reverse split anyone?

Anonymity increases the probability of people cheating. Even if they get caught there are essentially no consequences, just pick another server or nickname reconnect and carry on cheating. I also think the complexity of a game contributes to its signal to noise ratio in the sense that an rpg may be less likely to have the ratio of cheaters than an fps like half life. This may be due to simply having more players or the dynamic of the game is one that doesn't necessitate a whole lot of thinking compared to say an rpg. I think what I'm getting to is that reflex based games might be more prone to having people develop cheats for.

Also, OS updates need to be better and easier for the average user. To update FreeBSD requires that you write a cvsup configuration file, and run cvsup!

Try Debian 'apt-get update ; apt-get upgrade' all done! pretty easy and unless you're using custom sources no editing of files is needed as apt-config makes it pretty easy. apt is a pretty forward thinking tool and is really innovative when it comes to package management, that type of think will help Linux's viability in any market.

In fact I used to be able to install slashcode (pre bender slashcode mind you) in about 30-40 minutes from install (network connection providing) even faster is your average desktop setup which installs in a painless fashion I run three desktop environments just for kicks. I'm not advocating one tool as the one that will make or break Linux but apt has been one reliable and near indespensable tool. Suddenly we saw several 'ports' of apt-like functionality, up2date and similar package management helpers but apt comes with a maturity level and 'super cow powers'. So for what it's worth give debian a shot you may find as I did that it's not perfect but it certainly straightens out kinks and scratches itches, at least it did mine.
