  1. So this means that scammers can just pay Microsoft to put their scam and viruses in their search results? So anybody using Bing can just stop using it right now and forever because this is just unacceptable.

  2. This is a moot point. Self driving cars will never be a reality ever, the reason is not moral or technical it's legal. The person who is in the self driving car will always be legally responsible for everything that happens. So that means if the car malfunctions and kills somebody the "driver" will be prosecuted. Who in their right mind wants to use a self driving car if they can go to jail for using it?

  3. The solution to this is of course not allowing the China Telecom to add anything to the BGP. Very simple.

No it's like if you buy a house with a 3 rooms but when you move in you notice there are actually 4 rooms but one of them is locked and you don't have the key. When you inquire about this fourth room from the seller he says that he can open it for you a price of course.

    Seems kinda shady doesn't it?

The problem with Tesla is that obviously the price for the 75kWh battery is much higher than it needs to be if you can sell the higher battery for less money and still make a profit. The correct solution for this would be to lower the price for the 75 kWh battery so that you can sell it at the actual manufacturing price but not at the fake made up price.

It strikes me a blindingly STUPID, to just give up on, and throw out the whole driving and sustaining force that made the US the great country and world superpower it is.

The only reason US is a superpower is because it has a big landmass and has pretty all around good weather and a lot of land resources. The size of a country and it's usuability to support people is directly related to how big it can grow. Also if you import a lot of hard working immigrants it really helps the population and the economy. If every person from US had moved to Greenland instead I am pretty sure US/Greenland wouldn't be a superpower. You see when you are constantly fighting weather and failing crops and dying, it can be hard support a growing population.

I would consider Russia to be a superpower and still they have had socialism since forever. Now they are twice the size landmass compared to US however a major part of the land is inhospitable and for example about 15% is permanently frozen tundra useless for agriculture.

And then what makes a country great and capitalism great? Poverty in the US is at least 13.5% of the population. In russia it's about 14%. Does that make capitalism great?

  21. Lotus Notes gets a bad rep. on Baltimore Police Department Is Still Using Lotus Notes (baltimoresun.com) · · Score: 5, Interesting

I worked with Lotus Notes for many years and although its far from perfect it was actually maybe 30 years ahead of it's time. Most of the negative comes from people who don't understand what Lotus Notes is and/or think that the included email client is Lotus Notes. Which I agree was not very good and could have been improved drastically.

Lotus Notes is basically just a non relational database with a lot of build in core support for access control and replication. People are using NoSQL, Mongo and other non relational databasee and think that this is something new. This has been in Lotus Notes from the start. The Lotus Notes client software is basically just like the web browser is today with the app running completely in the browser.

What is great about Lotus Notes are the included features out of the box. It's basiaclly just a rapid application development software for data. The offline synchronizing and replication of data is amazing really. Because although you can implement replication in any system the replication system is built in and can handle replication for everything. So any system you build, automatically has data replication. The security is also built in with fine grained control to individual fields built in.

I could build for example a complete working CRM system in just one hour that had offline editing, replication and synchronization of data, fine grained access control, both fat client and web client enabled with zero code changes, Workflow integration, email integration, and much more. And this could be done without writing little or no code.

  22. I am not against GMO per se but we have to acknowledge that GMO unlike other cross breeding changes that have happened is that GMO changes have one thing against them and that is time. Selective changes that have happened already to the fruit we eat today have had time to test for any adverse effects.

We have to acknowledge the fact that anything we put in our stomach has the possbility to cause harm and the effects can manifest itself after a long time. There is always the possibility that something we eat today can kill us after 30 years or so.

  23. Perhaps to let OSM use the data and then a litigation comes out of nowhere from a "third party" (Like SCO, which is funded by Microsoft) to sue OSM for using the data. Doeesn't matter if they can use the data legally, as long as they can drag the litigation out long enough it could hurt OSM.
