This is something you learn in advertising as well as politics. Just getting a lot of attention is often COMPLETELY worthless. What you want is your objective to happen.

What is that? if you are an activist for something then you want something to happen. If that thing happens because these guys are doing this... then you got me, I was wrong. If it doesn't... then this failed.

If you're selling something then you want people to actually BUY it. I get ads all the time for stuff for really old people. Like... life alert etc. I'm not remotely old enough to even begin considering such a product so marketing it to me is a waste of resources.

Politics works the same way. You have to do targeted lobbying. If some jackoffs in California are vaguely aware of your situation in Spain but don't care then exactly how does that help you? You need to put pressure on YOUR politicians in YOUR country where the ACTUAL issue is happening. My opinion or your opinion on it means DICK. Because neither of us are going to put any pressure on those politicians that are actually controlling the issue.

This is a curio at best. It appears ineffectual and faddish.

Seriously... In California we have people show up to protests with handcuffs and gas masks. They put the gasmask on and then handcuff themselves to something.

It has become so common that police and construction workers make sure to keep a pair of bolt cutters on hand so they can cut the handcuffs off.

And the really serious protesters sometimes show up with these oil drums that they chain themselves into... and then pour cement into the drums so that you can't get their hands out unless break up the cement... which is dangerous because the jack hammer could damage their hands.

It causes a big problem. And then you have random acts of vandalism... not projecting some light on a wall... but actually splashing some paint onto said wall that expresses your message whatever that happens to be.

So yeah... projecting some light on a wall... slacktivism.

Again, the political authorities tend to take things more seriously that require more effort or guts. This shit is easy and is zero risk. It also involves not a lot of people actually having to show up.

In washington DC we have marches in the hundreds of thousands over various issues. And most of those are either ignored or go no where. Some light projected on a wall? Utterly ignorable.

It is a well established product. It is as likely to fail as your car is to not start on any given morning. The technology is quite refined and well understood.

Fire safes can typically handle fires in excess of a thousand degrees or so. If the fire gets up to blast furnace levels... then your data is likely fucked. But it is really rare for fires to get that hot. What is burning in your house is typically wood framing, furnature, carpets, drapes, etc. Airflow in a burning house is unpredictable and tends to dictate the nature of the fire. Chances are a server closet is going to have TERRIBLE airflow for a fire. They typically overheat on their own without ventilation and whatever ventilation is sufficient to keep a room like that cool is going to be far than what a raging fire would need. So... unless you're keeping your fire safe in the middle of a room designed also to have the airflow characteristics of a blast furnace... I wouldn't worry about it. Put the drives in a data safe and you're going to be just fine.

I think you can buy an acceptable data safe almost anywhere. I was in sam's club the other day and I swear they were selling them there as well. Absent that, the internet can get one to your door in a couple days.

There are various designs. Some of them have ports in the back where you plug into the back of the safe but don't run an actual cable. The cable that connects the internal to the external ports runs through the interior of the safe and goes through lots of gaskets.

But I think the ones that let you run your own cable are probably not a lot worse so far as safety is concerned. All you have to do is keep a reasonable seal on the cables and probably have the cables go up and down in the case prior to entering the enclosure so that neither water nor hot gas can get in there.

Regardless, you can look at this video:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?...

There are lots of them like that. This is a fairly well established product and you can get similar products from several different vendors that all do the same thing.

Fire safes have been around for ages. The added feature of running a cable into the fire safe isn't a big stretch.

So... that is what I would do. I'd get some external drives, buy a data safe, and then put that next to the server where upon at given intervals the data is backed up to the externals in the fire proof data safe.

  12. Renewables are defuse on The Myth of Going Off the Power Grid · · Score: 1

The big problem with maintaining a centralized energy grid is that renewables like wind and solar are defuse. They don't lend themselves well to big centralized power stations and make more sense just on everyone's roof.

    Here is my ideal.

Everyone gets solar panels on their roofs and maybe a small wind turbine if they're in a really windy area. Possibly this stuff is bought and paid for by the government and the government will technically own the panels but they're just installed on everyone's roof.

Then you have some sort of reasonable energy buffer in every home. I don't know if we have the technology to do this properly but you want something that has a very very long life. I'm talking about something that ideally doesn't have to be replaced ever. Maybe some maintenance now and again to fix a part of but the core investment should remain very stable. Some ideas would be an air pressure tank. You could have a 1000 gallon tank, bury it in the ground, and then use a compressor to fill it up when you have excess power and than drain it through a turbine when you need power. Obviously a very good chemical battery bank would probably be ideal but they're expensive and they deteriorate. Even the lead deep cycles.

And when it comes to grid power, that power can come from nuclear, hydro electric, geothermal, etc. But solar and wind really make the most sense not in dense farms but just spread around on everyone's roof. The other nice thing about that is that you don't have to transmit most of that power. It is consumed at the point of generation which means the actual power demands of communities per person falls radically because they're mostly providing their own power.

And you could even have municipal energy storage such that the community buys power during off peak hours from the grid which further makes the system more efficient.

Energy storage is a big problem. Will Tesla's batteries solve the problem? I can't see how they could. They don't appear to do anything innovative besides just be large. That isn't good enough. They either need to be a lot cheaper or they need to last a lot longer.

I saw something on slashdot awhile ago about all liquid municipal batteries that was sort of interesting. They basically just had a giant pool or tank and the various chemicals separated out by density. There was even an insulating compound that was between the two electrolytes.

It was an interesting idea because it would be very cheap to build batteries like that. You just make a big concrete tank, possibly spray the inside with a protective coating, and then fill the tank up with the various chemical... and then leave them alone for a bit to let all the chemicals organize by density... and then stick the electrode and cathode into the relevant layer and bam... giant fucking battery.

I'm not sure what kind of corrosion would deterioration would happen. I assume you'd want to pump portions of each of the chemicals out to either be replaced or filtered, or reprocessed at some interval. If you're really efficient you would do that constantly but at about the rate the various compounds became contaminated. If you match the purification speed to the inherent contamination speed, the battery would technically be stable indefinitely.
