I don't have one either, and after reading that article I can safely say that I never will in the future either...
Anybody know what happened with the boot ads?
Well, the MPAA has the money, so they will most likely win (that's how the legal system works, right?).
Since the MPAA managed to make it illegal to even link to a site that has DeCSS available for download, I thought I'd try a seach on go.com (a search engine owned by Disney, member of MPAA), and came up with several links to DeCSS code.
So, MPAA members are themselves linking to it - are they going to prosecute themselves now?
Can I send you an e-mail that legally compels you to send me money?
Nah, use their own tactics: Send them an inch thick stack of paper full of paragraphs explaining that they better pay up or you'll tie 'em up in court for years...
Doesn't surprise me either.
We installed a bunch of cat5 wiring for a client that moved to an office in a new buiding.
Two days later when the PacBell tech came in to install the phones, he cut some of the cat5 wires we had installed and used it for the telephone!
I have PacBell DSL at home, and if you can avoid them, do so at all cost.
The speeds are so slow at nite where I live, that a dialup is faster. In the morning and during the day the speeds are fine, so it's obviously not a line problem but just too many users for the equipment they have.
When you call their tech support (don't if you want to keep your sanity), nobody knows anything.
The last time (yesterday) I called them I was asked "what windows you using?", after which I had to fake my way through the standard PacBell win95/98 control panel troubleshooting instructions (I use Linux, and never, ever tell them that, because they'll hang up on you - this has happened to me twice) before they connected me through to the next level, then the next.
This went on for about 4 hours until I finally got connected to someone at a high enough technical level whom they said should be able to help me, but by then it was 5:02 PM and the phone just rang and rang forever: they had gone home, and there was no way I could get the previous person back on the line.
Sorry for the rant, but I had to vent this before I explode...
I've been running Linux NAT on a 486/66 for about 3 years now (and, as cdipierr said in a previous post, try that with Win2K), and have never had a problem.
I recently purchased a little ip sharing device made by Netlux that does the NAT for me now. This thing does port forwarding as well (port specific or range of ports), and running ipchains on the Linux box behind it secures me pretty well I think.
It uses very little power as well compared to my old 486, and being located in California (the light at the end of the tunnel will be turned off until further notice) with the current power crisis going on, this saves me a few bucks as well.
I know all this may sound like a plug, but it's worked out great for me.
For a nice ipchains firewall setup, go to linux-firewall-tools.com.
This site will generate a nicely working ipchains firewall script in a few minutes.
Right on.
Another thing they do that really gets me, is that when (if at all) you actually do get the rebate check, it's disguised as the regular junkmail that usually goes straight into the trash.
I've almost tossed many a rebate in the trash this way (how many that I've missed that did go in the trash I don't know).
Nowadays I'm very reluctant to buy anything that has a mail-in rebate. If I don't get the discount at the register, I'll shop elsewhere.
They nibble away at your freedom little by little until you have none left,
and one day you wake up and wonder what the hell happened. By then it's too late.
Voters get what they deserve, nothing more.
Oh, wait, we got G.W. Oh, man...
800 concurrent users at any given moment Wow, those user licenses must cost you a fortune?
Oracle has added 10X more
Well, they _do_ have the $$ to pay for developers...
I just don't think Larry Ellison is out there worrying about GPL'd competition
If not, he's making a big mistake (IMHO).
Oracle's database sales have been dropping steadily for a while now, and I for one sold the few Oracle shares I did have a few months ago.
Oracle has a greater "lock in" effect
True. All those _very_ highly paid Oracle dba's out there aren't about to flush their jobs down the toilet,
and management usually does what the IT dept. tells them (read 'buy Oracle') because they don't know any better.
The LEFT JOIN is something I wish they (Postgres) would put in, but then, Oracle don't support it either...
The reasons I prefer Postgres are, to name a few:
Transactions
Sub SELECT's
Using CASE WHEN... END when SELECTing from tables with 30,000+ rows is very fast (another thing Oracle don't support at all)
Postgres used (pre 6.5.3 i think) to have some memory leaks when using transactions, but this seems to have been fixed in later versions.
I don't know if this spherical motor would be of much use for it, but as far as human-like motion goes there is a lot of research being done on artificial muscle made from ionized polymeric gels. There's a lot of interesting info available at the
Artificial Muscle Research Institute (free registration required).
Blame the net as usual...
I suppose the power generating companies shutting down a large percentage of the plants for "maintenance" has nothing to with it.
A good article about the whole mess and the causes of it can be found here.
From the article:
When asked about reports that Apple would open retail locations later this year, Jobs would neither confirm nor deny the reports. Later, when one dealer commented that it wasn't fair for them to have to compete directly with Apple, Jobs' only response was, "this is America."
And then he's surprised that these stores steer customers away from Apple products...
Typical Apple, no wonder they have problems.
This is in my opinion a bad desicion by MS.
If I cannot easily get full info about security (and other) issues in the OS I run on my servers, guess what, I will NOT run that OS on any server I'm responsible for.
Right. Apple sued Microsoft for the Windows look a few years ago, and lost.
Even though I think Apple's wrong here, I can see why they're doing it; it appears their default risk is very high, and they are scratching for every penny.
Since you do work for Sprint - does Sprint have any plans to make these 'wireless towers' connections available to other companies that want to compete with Sprint?
I get there just fine as well...
as I don't actually have a Phoenix BIOS
I don't have one either, and after reading that article I can safely say that I never will in the future either...

Thanks. I did get a '404 Not Found' with that lin though...

When in Belgium, use Gnutella :)
Drivers for other winmodems can be found at linmodems.org.
Personally though, since I got the DSL hooked up I'm never going back to dialup...
Right on.

Don't put these MS-Dell-Unisys voting machines in Florida!
If you thought they couldn't count, you should see 'em trying to run a Win2000 box...

But the heatsink will be bigger than you father's Oldsmobile.
On the plus side, it'll cut your use of heating oil significantly.
It's a joke indeed. As with everything else in life, follow the money-trail...

you'll have to reinsert CDs at random and periodic intervals to prove ownership
So why should I pay them? If my CD is already in the drive, I'll just listen to it instead of some poor quality MP3...
