  1. Here Are my thoughts As another webmaster on Making Banner Ads Suck Less · · Score: 2
I think the karma for adds is a bit much, has some good things, but other bad ones. I think the re-wards should not be in terms of "adds" but in other features slashdot bring them. Or discounts at stores.

I think alowing each use to chose custom adds, and comment on them is a wonderful idea. And "karma" should be based on that alone. Not clicking, or chosing the bigger banner

The problem with banner adds isn't that they don't work, its that people can tell when the banner gets a direct respons(click/sale). Also many banners are anoying and even offensive.

Many adds I see are trying to get someone to "click" on them. And nothing else. Think of how many TV comercials are there only to get people to call them?

As far as demographics content goes, I would go as deap as "state" and no more. Also let each user select more than one. There are many reasons for this, 1. On the East coast you can easliy live 40 min from 5 different states, 2. Many of us travel.

The peopel making banners need to do a little more home work. Showing pictures of women or tricking customers to click on an add makes things worse. I think the biggest reason why people hate banners, is that it takes to long to download compaird to the rest of the content. This is because of illeagle cookies, slow banner servers, large banners.

  2. No . . . on Micropayments: Effective Replacement For Ads Or ? · · Score: 1

The internet is about information. And what makes the internet what it is today is that its free.

Companies need to realize that the "net" is not there to get rich off of. That this e*crap* is crap. The internet is a way to: expand your existing customer base, better server your customers/potential customers.

However, I would pay for some features, like a really good pure web based e-mail, or my online bill paying company. I will not pay for "content", nor will I pay per use type charges.

I think the online adds need to change. They should pay for a number of visitors they are shown to, much like any other add industry. They also need to start using effictive adds. I think "ThinkGeek"s adds are good at this, but most adds don't even spark my intress.

MS came in, created tags for the SAME thing. Not to add to it. And there tags are often very much ie where you can't use the page if you don'e have ie. (such as ms modification to the framgs tags)

BTW, your example does work on ns and I beleave is also leagle under w3c. Its people like you, and the author of that website that ruin the web.

If such a system was put in place, none of it should be patented and all of it should be open source. Nothing closed or hidden. No hardware, no software. No one is to "own" anything about it. They just work on it and paid to work on it. There should never be only 1 vendor for something. Also, it would have to be in testing for YEARS! There are so many things to take in place, blind people(brail), people w/ bad eye sight, people who don't have fingers, color blind people, people over seas, voting at home. It should also have some form have hard copy at each station. Maybe just a dot matrix printer priting user:vote. None of this data should be put into a dadabase other than the votes. Peoples names, time of day, etc should not be put in electronic form. A form of receipt would be good, gives the "customer" that warm and fuzzy feeling.
