Wasn't having to learn a new interface one of their biggest arguements against open source software? I seem to remember report after report after report showing the "costs" to train employees to use non MS software.
Of course they did this on purpose. The NGE was never and I mean never spoken about until after the expansion shipped. Every other change of this magnitude was trumpeted as being better than sliced bread, but this one wasn't. The expansion had rewards for professions that were going to be eliminated, not to mention all the time/money spent on revamps for the ranger and squad leader professions that were just shelfed for the NGE. If you think this wasn't planned to keep the players in the dark until after the credit cards were charged, your unbelivably naive.
is thinking the millions of Star Wars fans, ranging in age from toddlers to 100 year old grandparents will pay them 15 bucks a month for a shoddy FPS wannabe. To risk your traditional RPG type customers for some unknown amount of FPS customers is just bad business, especially since there are much better Star Wars FPS type games out there that don't have a monthly subscription.
It was actually quite a bit different. The crafting aspect of it alone was pretty deep. For instance, as a armorsmith, you would have to collect/buy different types of hides, bones and minerals. These items each spawned for only a week or so and had stats that shifted. So the wooly hide that you could collect on Naboo one week might have been good to make your resists better, and the stuff you collected the next week might make your encumbrance better. You could make layers that boosted protection for different damage types, then make them into segments, then finally into the different armor pieces. The really sad thing is, armor protection got to the point where you could make 90% damage reduction armor after you collected enough resources with the right stats, then the devs had the nerve to blame the crafters for unbalancing the system. Nobody had ever bothered to punch in the theoretical numbers to actually see how good armor could get before they pushed the game live.
In the two plus years this game has been out, your developers have repeatedly ignored the live game to work on expansions. In your one post to the SWG forums you asked for the players to be patient as SOE worked so hard to fix bugs and make the game fun, yet to this day, some 6 months or more later, there are still several broken quests in the Rage of the Wookiee expansion. Please convince me that the same inept managers that have brought the game to this point deserve my business.
A comment about the tactical awareness aspect of the CU as you describe it. In the CU you select the weapon that has the higest damage per second you own, auto attacking with the highest damage special attack you have, and constanly watch your toolbar icons to determine when you can hit the button next time. There is no tactics to this. It just replaced spamming one attack in the old system with button mashing in the new one.
In the end it is only a game. I'm disappointed because of the friends I will no longer be playing with, but I'll also find a better way to spend my 60 bucks a month on something that is fun.
It is really sad to see the leaders of this country jumping onto any idea any joker out there proposes, especially one who stands to gain much power with his offering.

This CU is a perfect example of greed on the part of Sony and Lucas Arts, nothing more, nothing less. There is a great post on the SWG forums that summed this up perfectly, http://forums.station.sony.com/swg/board/message?b oard.id=cudiscussiontemp&message.id=25971
