I'm of the same mindset. I don't need a tablet... nothing about my life requires I have one. Sure it would be darn cool and I'd use it. At $200 it is beginning to get tempting.
However, my desktop is ancient- and I'd much rather just upgrade that for the $200. I use that all the time- and I do need that to function.
Tablets are beginning to get good enough and cheap enough for those of us not loaded with dough to be taking a second look. Maybe in a couple years I'll pick one up.
I see valid use for an iPad. I see it being usefull in the office.
However, no-one NEEDS a personal iPad- it is little more than a status symbol toy which does things that most owners of iPads already have tools that do each of the tasks better.
That's where a $200 device can whack them. For the average Joe who doesn't have the funds or the desire for a status symbol... doesn't care if he doesn't look cool by not having an Apple- he can get the toy that most people probably can save up for without meaning baby gets no shoes.
Background on me: I'm a centrist. Some of my views would have the left saying I'm a right wing radical. Some of my views would have the right saying I'm a left wing radical. Overall though, I sit in the centre... definately not a moderate though...:)
I'm a big fan of science and read a lot of science magazines. I've noticed a lot of angst between the right and science (in the US at le. Science magazines and scientists frequently bash the right-wing (which I feel is inappropriate to the process). At the same time- I've noticed a huge distrust of science and the scientist from the right-wing.
Science shouldn't be a political thing. It bothers me that science and the right tend to be at war. I believe we need to do what we can to promote science and technology- but I don't want the left running everything. I'm sure the war starts from the right wanting to cut public spending on science (as all things)- but surely there are plenty of right-wing politicians out there that understand the difference between investment and wastefull spending.
Y'know- I think that depends on how big a trekkie you are.
I've had this discussion with people before. People like myself, casual watchers who caught the occasional show- but didn't watch each episode- saw random ones out of order... DS9 was not as good.
People who watched every episode, and were really into Star Trek everything loved DS9.
Yeah- Enterprise was worse! Far worse!
Original: Campy- but unique and interesting. Interesting plots. Next Generation: Didn't like the writing as much- but the actors made it worth while. Excellent staff of actors. Will Wheaton not included.
Voyager: Thought the story writing improved- had some interesting ideas and twists- but the acting was just dreadfull. DS9: Didn't appeal to me at all- probably as I said, because I'm not a "watch-every episode type of guy".
Is it really that simple though- we don't know what his motivations to answer would be.
He might prefer a Grizzly because it would be supporting the fauna of his homeland. Or maybe prefer a Lion- because they are an environmentally threatened species.
Sharks and Crocodiles would imply that he was (most likely) spending his last days in a warm location- quite likely relaxing at some coastal location or on the banks of a lazy river.
I think I'd personally go with the lion. I like cats.
If you could pick from the Star Wars universe to staff your next 5 year mission into space- who would you choose to accompany you on the Enterprise?
Would you perhaps have Anakin Skywalker in the engine room since he made a good pod racer and an android as a kid. Perhaps you'd like Yoda in sick bay or as your number 2.
So who would you pick from Star Wars to man the Enterprise?
In Star Trek 5 (I think it was 5) you travel back in time to collect whales. Do you ever wish you could use the enterprise to travel back in time and stop "Deep Space 9" from being made?
(I've got an annoying habit of saying "Hello Computer" in a peeved Scottish accent whenever my computer won't respond as a result of this film)
Worked for a small 70 person company that was losing money. Owner retired and let his son take over. His son decided to cut staff and for the next several months followed a policy of two people got laid off every friday.
Every friday everyone wondered if they would be one of the "lucky two".
It went on like this until there were only a skeleton crew of about 25 left. Not all that left left because they were let go- EVERYONE was TRYING to get out because the 2 out on Friday policy was murder on morale.
You tap on the badge and say "Engineering" - and someone in "Engineering" would hear you saying "Engineering"- the show never gave any indication that there was a delay- it's almost as if the communicator knew who you were going to call before you even called them.
How does it do this and when will Apple make a communicator like this?
If [insert whoever owns the rights to Star Trek] called you on the phone and said;
"We're starting a new Star Trek series, centred on the later years of Captain Kirk and we want you to resume the role"
Would you? I realise that this would contradict the story line of the movies... but nonetheless, would you jump at the role of playing the character again? If he offered plenty of passionate scenes with 7 of 9 would it change your mind?
I see comments on "Free Speech" and "Public" University so Free Speech applies.
I'm sure if you went to any government institution and saw racist posters or biggoted posters few would defend whoever hung them with "free speech". Sure, if it were at their home- but if you went to update your Soc Sec card and saw a KKK poster hanging on some office door- you'd want the biggot fired - it would be inappropriate.
Heck- I'd be annoyed if I saw a cop-car with a political affiliation bumper-sticker on it- and those arn't offensive (necessarily).
The question is- was the poster appropriate? I can see both sides of the coin here. I personally wouldn't be offended or threatened by it.
However,in this day and age where the media has mass-published stories of shootings at schools and universities- and following one man in Norway massacring innocent teens stuck on an island... I can see how some parents might be a tad paranoid on unhappy if their child was going to a university where a professor had on his door a poster casually discussing killing.
Thus, no the poster isn't reay offensive (to most) or threatening (to most)- but given the context is inappropriate. I don't know that the police should be involved... but I don't run the school
Apparantly Suckerborg himself donated to Diaspora to help fund its development. Would be interesting to see his motivation there. Was he simply donating to a "good cause"?
The US, which is where said New York traffic light would be located; does not follow the international standard and does go straight from red to green without the red and amber warning before the green.
What if, you don't vote- the city calculates who you were most likely going to vote for.
Spokeo allows you to lookup anyone online and learn "facts" about them.
Quite amusing though- it has me listed as a republican protestant. No idea how it jumped to that conclusion; I'm an agnostic centrist. It also thinks my mother is my sister... and I'm not from West Virginia.

Sadly, a public car here would sound to the masses like "public bathroom", "free lodging" and most surely "getaway vehicle"
I'm not sure one of these would work well as a getaway vehicle... although I can see the 60mph chase down the interstate... being filmed live...

Oh, and we're assuming the studio does give you the opportunity to name your own price.

God is French- why would he save the imperial measurement system?
Has anyone considered a space escalator instead of a space elevator? Just keep your space-boot laces away from the yellow lines.
