Why is everyone so pessimistic about everything Musk does? Even here on a supposed nerd site? Jeez,
It's not just Musk, it's anything outside the comfort zone or cutting edge technology. Slashdot is very different than it was when it was new. I think the average age of user on here is much older than it used to be.
We have old jaded engineers, IT staff, etc, as the majority of visitors now. Anything that wasn't possible to do with tech when they were in school must therefore always be impossible. Because one or two technologies didn't take off as quickly as expected... no technology will.
This is a much more pessimistic place than it was 10+ years ago.
Google "EEG computer mouse" or "Star Wars Force Trainer". If you can't stand Google, find anyone with an EE undergrad degree. Chances are, they or one of their former classmates has done something similar.
Yes, this technology is with us today, and has been with us for ages.
No, it's not reading your mind. That's just what marketing wants you to believe.
All those "control with your mind" things are awful. I wouldn't be suckered into buying one until 1000's of fools before me have tried it and universally given thumbs up.
I remember my son wanted that Star Wars Force Trainer thing, tried to warn him it would be crap. Still... it was his #1 wish item for xmas, so reluctantly got it for him. It was crap.
First tinfoil-hat thought that popped into my head was they were analyzing the fingerprints used to log into the phone and can spot family resemblances...
Honestly though, I bet it was some weird coincidence. Statistical noise that looks like a bizarre coincidence.
I didn't say Israel tech would be safe! (depends what it is).
Something like firewall, malware or antivirus, should ideally be developed domestically from trusted vetted sources. If I were Russia I'd be doing the same (not using American products).
Also I get notified, with nice pictures, of lonely sex-starved MILFs who live "Only 400 away". 400 yards? 400 miles? Must be miles because no-one lives with 400 yards of me except an old farmer.
What you don't know is your old farmer neighbor is a pervert with a basement stocked with women.
And 1080 is not acceptable for a new set now. Go at least 2k, 4k is better.
Surely that depends on size. If it is 40 inch or smaller from a reasonable difference, no one is going to notice the difference between 2k and 1080. Or 4k and 1080.
Large TVs, or ones you sit uncommonly close to are the ones that require higher resolution. For small and midsized sets anything over 1080 is overkill and you're paying for something you won't notice.
“There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.”
Competition is good... as long as they have a standard way of interacting with smart devices.
It's in nobodies best interest if we end up with a bunch of smart devices, some that only work with siri, some that only work with Alexa, some that only work with googly-moogly, and some that only work with Samsung.
Common interface with smart devices would be nice.
What was $10 last week could easily be $60 this week. I don't expect the verbal version to work any better.
Well, it COULD give better information on price. It COULD give reviews. It COULD give any information that an online purchase would do. The problem is, to do any of that it would be slower and more inconvenient than going online.
If you're going to do any sort of shopping around- voice shopping seems a much less convenient way of shopping.
This sure sounds like female employees are going to be enticed with better compensation, perks, more flexible hours, etc. - how else could they possibly "convince them to stay longer"?
If being more flexible with hours and giving better compensation attracts more women then everyone benefits. Even men will surely be happier with more flexible hours and better benefits. If it attracts women but makes mens lives easier- that's a benefit for everyone.
At the moment women are leaving at a higher rate than men but it says it'll fall short of setting "quotas."
I think "Quotas" are what most people object to that object to hiring more women and minorities. No one wants to feel like they missed out on a job because they were the wrong sex or race. Not men, women, Europeans, or Africans.
Trying to be more appealing to women and minorities is a noble goal because in order to relate to all demographics of clients you need all demographics of staff. It's easy to miss out sometimes what another group might find appealing or offensive without valid representation.
Appeal to minorities and all genders but don't set quotas. As long as Blizzard is really doing this and not just saying they are to look good- they're doing the right thing by my way of thinking.
What, Cuba may have done something to physically injure US diplomats? Unthinkable! Cuba is a valuable member of the international community, and an important partner of the US. Or at least that's what our last President said.
And friends don't physically assault other friends' diplomats.
To be fair we don't know that Cuba has done anything. It could be a neutral party- or we could have done it to ourselves accidentally.
If our own counter-spying technologies relied on confusing listening bugs by drowning them out in ultrasound noise we could have made our own diplomats go deaf.
Fox news doesn't try because it has never been their intention to offer just the news. Fox has always been about presenting a conservative view point.
CNN, etc, may frequently have a liberal slant to their stories but that's less to do with deliberately trying to be a "liberal" news source and more to do with the fact that they have liberal journalists and editors.
Fox is deliberately right wing with the stated purpose of being right wing. CNN is accidentally left wing (but actually have stories that cover the spectrum).
To me there is a notable difference in trying and failing to deliberately being a propaganda source.
Yeah, listening in on phone calls and permanently damaging diplomats is exactly the same thing.
Mother of false equivalence.
#1 theory is that this was caused BY listening in. Not that they deliberately made the diplomats deaf. In all likelihood, no matter who is responsible, Cubans, Russians, whoever... they probably didn't know they were damaging the diplomats hearing.
Immunity and protection are the precepts of diplomatic law. Without them there are no diplomatic relations. Time to take our ball and go home.
Have to say I disagree. Cuba is one of our closest neighbors; it is to both our benefits that we have a positive relationship. Besides, do you honestly believe that we haven't conducted espionage on Cuban diplomats?
We were listening in on Angela Merkel's telephone calls for chips sake, Spying on the chancellor, the leader of the free world. If we're spying on such an important ally, I'm sure we've been spying on Cuban diplomats. We've been spying on everyone.
We'd be huge hypocrites to throw a paddy over this and take our ball home.
Tesla was a pioneer in the field of electrics which is probably why that name was chosen.
He had nothing to do with battery powered cars; although such a thing would have been unattainable in his day; had he been around today, he may or may not have had an interest. Who's to say?
Why is everyone so pessimistic about everything Musk does? Even here on a supposed nerd site? Jeez,

I control with my enormous dick.
The only game you control with that is a dead deer you found on the road and loaded into your pickup truck.
with your mind?
Imagine the possibilities
Won't happen in my lifetime.
Google "EEG computer mouse" or "Star Wars Force Trainer". If you can't stand Google, find anyone with an EE undergrad degree. Chances are, they or one of their former classmates has done something similar.

You don't have to prove that Kaspersky is in bed with Russian intelligence to not want to use it for government computers.
Merely suspecting it might be is enough reason not to use it.
Also I get notified, with nice pictures, of lonely sex-starved MILFs who live "Only 400 away". 400 yards? 400 miles? Must be miles because no-one lives with 400 yards of me except an old farmer.

Advertisers must think I'm an over 40 y/o single man. I get so many "Date 40+ year old women" ads.
I'm married, don't go on dating sites, and in my 30's. I wish I knew what made advertisers think I'm looking for older women. Makes me chuckle.
As George W. Bush once said:
“There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.”
I certainly wouldn't trust AccuWeather again.
Two hour tops to get where? The population centers? Or North Korea? Also, how would you notice a zombie apocalypse vs any other day in Texas?
I should specify Get AWAY from there (the population centers).
A zombie apocalypse in Texas would be marked by Texans acting more similar to human beings than normal.
North Korea has launched an armada of 300 plus nuclear warheads aimed at the 300 largest urban population centres. You have 2 hours tops to get there.
I hope you check back on Slashdot in the next 2 hours.
Oh yeah- and there's a zombie apocalypse just started in Texas. No stopping it. Pick up a chain saw on your way out of town before it's too late.

When Estonia is subjugated by Russia again in 6 months, how much is this currency going to be worth?
This sure sounds like female employees are going to be enticed with better compensation, perks, more flexible hours, etc. - how else could they possibly "convince them to stay longer"?

Right now it's impossible to know.
Fox news doesn't try because it has never been their intention to offer just the news. Fox has always been about presenting a conservative view point.

I'm sure the intention was not to make them deaf, that was a side effect. There would be no point in making people deaf just for the sake of it.
Immunity and protection are the precepts of diplomatic law. Without them there are no diplomatic relations. Time to take our ball and go home.
