And what does Netscape being bloated under linux have to do with standards compliance? I pointed out that Netscape 6 will comply to more standards. Don't like it. Don't use it. Market forces in action. To freaking bad about how it sucks under linux. Personally I run IE all the time at work, because I can't live without full screen viewing. Remember I pointed out that Netscape 6 would be more standards compliant than IE. And who is talking about self-righteous arrogance and hypocrisy? I also run Netscape 4.72 on linux at home and it seems downright peppy for me, faster than 4.71.

You're obviously just clueless. The comparison to animal farm is strikingly misguided. Am I to understand that even when I've been given evidence to prove a point (i.e. standard compliance tests) that I'm to ignore the evidence because of some guilt about prefering one thing (linux) over another (windows)?

IE is feature rich, Netscape 6 will be standards compliant. It will be up to the consumer to make the best choice. I'll probably take standards compliant because (A) There is no IE on Linux (B) Features can be added later (C) There will be no choice if netscape goes away.

I just picked up a book by Cliff Stoll (Known for the cracker non-fiction whodonnit Cuckoos Egg) in which he argues that Computers DO NOT belong in schools in that they are sold as the quick and easy way to a great education, where they only serve as a distraction from the ultimate purpose of educating. A good read, and I'd recommed it to all techies as a viewpoint not often considered. I wish I had it on Monday and would have thought to pose this question to Woz, as it would be interesting to know if he'd heard the arguments involved, considered them, and how he would insure that technology does aid in education and not become a distraction...

One noted example from the book is a school district where the students loved emailing people from foreign countries, while 11 students who were going to the school district from different countries were completely ignored.

    I'd recommend this book highly.

  10. The amazing stability on Matt Welsh on NPR · · Score: 1

I'm a linux advocate, but I hate articles that proclaim linux is so damn stable. Yeah, it's stable until you start working on something as non-standard as using linux as a desktop instead of as a server. Once you do that things start falling apart and the learning curve is dwarfed by rate of change(good or bad). Libraries are constantly changing, libraries are conflicting, libraries are missing. I've had to reboot linux several times, most notably X server crashes, although I have a persistent mingetty problem that frequently causes me to power done without properly shutting down. Applications don't work, one caller mentioned the famous netscape instability. What good is stability if you don't have a damn thing to run on it. I've taken a redhat 5.1 install and basically had to recompile most of the included stuff to get a decent desktop system, and I still can't run most of the red hat admin tools, because of library problems. Linux is just alright, and the only thing that really seperates it from the pack is its open nature, and I think that needs to be emphasized, and explained better to why that matters to your apeman computer user.

Sure windows can do some cool stuff, but it just isn't the same.
