Before you start flaming away, think about it? Why did the TCP/IP stack become wildly popular? why did BSD sockets became the most used? Why did X catch on?

To all those questions... there's a simple answer...

They have a free license, which allowed programmers to take the good concepts and apply them to newer designs... NO , it's not stealing code, since most of the time you can NOT take someones code and apply it without great modification to another system, it's true code sharing, and something that betters the industry as a whole....

This is why people object to the GPL, in a perfect world, sure it would work, but in an imperfect world like ours.... you should not, and people don't like to, be forced into releasing your work, just because you used someone else's concept

Hence, why the X license and the BSD license help the advancement of unix, and why licenses like the GPL actually promote the splintering of unix...

WHile this could be true, i personally don't think so. Most New FreeBSD users can be categorized into two main sectors. One, ex linux users, that want to try it out, and see what is all about. Mostly because of problems they've had with linux, other times because they just want to try something new. Two, current Solaris, commecial unix users, that are looking for a reliable platform, on relative inexpensive hardware.

In most applications, you cannot just cut and paste code, you need to adapt it to fit your frame work, which makes it quite different. All that is left is the ideal on the design, which like standards, should be shared. The importance and the competitive edge is gained by the better implementation, well sometimes at least.

The BSD camp practically fueled the used of the tcp/ip protocol, greatly due to their fact that's their tcp/ip stack was freely available for others to build on, and oddly enouhg, it is still arguably the fastest performer.

Need i mention bind or apache? both improved by corporations despite their BSD license. The BSD license allows a greater corporate appeal to OSS. Great designs need to be shared ;)

Performance related to peers is usually one.... and perfomrance retaled to load is usually another...

I'm going to make myself the subject... although i only achieve a 1300 in the SATs ... i was ranked 6 out of a class of 600 graduates... topping that was the fact that i took every available course in HS ( 5 years total of math actually ) grade avrg was 91, and the valedictorian was only a 93... due mostly to the great course load.

this is just an example, a bad one at that... but you get the point.... there are people that are quite bright... but for some reason or another.. didn't give much importance to the SAT's... i for one... had parents that went to college and were raised outside of the US, and had a horrible college advising...

so i wound up at cornell..
