Great. I can afford this one.

UK Linux Conf

· Score: 1
At last a UK Linux conference I can actually afford to attend. The recent Netproject and UNICOM Linux and open source conferences cost around £300 (excluding VAT) to attend and when you add the travelling expenses to that they were really unaffordable and these events were only for one day. However this one is really excellent value for money as this one only costs £70.50 inc VAT (+ £20.57 for UKUUG membership if you're not a member).
Now all I have to do is check that I can get time off work and if I can I'll be there.
It's great to see Intel cooperating on such an important project. Having the gcc compiler for that architecture is vital for the development of Linux on the platform. All I can say is it's great to seeIntel taking OSS seriously.
I can now buy a laptop! I never bought a laptop before as I didn't want to see Microsoft get hold of any of my money and I didn't have the time and effort to go for a refund. Hopefully this is just one more step towards choice.
Recompiling for the pentium i586 arch certainly does offer performance differences for most applications. However although the differences are noticable other factors are probably more important when considering which distribution to use.
I haven't tried stampede yet but if it does compile optimisations with a good distribution then I may use it.
Then again I could just recompile all the sources of my favourite distribution to make it optimised for i686 but that takes time and effort!!
I thought the abscence of mentioning Mandrake was a mistake becasue I belive at the moment it's the easiest to install linux distribution out there (I haven't tried Caldera 2.2 yet).
But I still maintain that this was a fairly good review for the mainstream press who only normally talk about RedHat.
The article wasn't too bad in terms of accuracy however I wish it was a bit more up to date and covering SuSE 6.0 instead of 5.3 in the article. It seems a lot more accurate than some of the rubbish other articles that people like ZDnet would print. I'm impressed!!
Well the MP3's I downloaded had weird al mentioned in the titles. So they were wrong. Anybody know who did do those parodies? I guess the people who put together the MP3's thought Weird Al == Parodies
Can you just imagine the FUD ZDNET could spread after reading the front page of RedHat.com: MAJOR LINUX DISTRIBUTOR SUPPORTS CALL IN SICK DAY Major Linux distributer RedHat has encouraged the Linux users and developers to participate in a national call in sick day in an attempt to get more people off work so they can help with the Linux kernel. Mr R. Sole from Microsoft says, 'RedHat will go to any level to disrupt the process of capitalism - they expect to disrupt the economy by this event and encourage sales of their OS developed in open source methods simialr to communism'. Mr Sole also adds that this action by RedHat can cause disruption to many business and is a bigger threat to the millennium bug (Mr Sole also points out that Linux suffers tremendously from the Y2K problem). The only way to solve the problem is to have all machines running Windows 98 or NT with the new IE5.1 which is designed to eradicate all Linux content preventing your employees getting any ideas.
On the page of pics from the Linux conference. There's a picture of a Windows virtual machine running on RedHat Linux. It looks impressive. Does anyone know what the advantages/disadvantages of the Windows VM are compared to WINE and does anyone have any idea where I can find out more about the Windows VM (URL)
Ingrid (the babe at Metro FM) says I'm ugly. The great thing about working on the radio is it doesn't really matter. For the brave my picture is on the Metro FM website.
I guess they will as that's the entire reason for having accounts. But it could be posssible that they know what's going on but decide to turn a blind eye as at least it'd be visitors to the site that they wouldn't have otherwise.
I've got a good idea. Why not try and make to 2000 RELAVANT comments. This would indeed be a novelty. I suspect the 'last post' comments will get deleted by Rob anyway. My view on GNOME: it has potential but version 1.0 was released too soon.

What do you expect from NSI?
Anyway it looks like the problem is getting fixed.

You need to work for a cool company that lets you use Linux. Hopefully in the future more companies will.
