A question I have regarding this style of thought is, at what point do you feel you interacted with the system? My father ingested carcinogens through his tobacco products (disclaimer: I'm not above the occasional maduro myself). His aversion to withdrawal was greater than his sense with respect to this habit. Sure, tobacco has deep pockets, and the lawyers get wood at the thought of class action lawsuits, but would there be supply without demand? The author would surely counter that facts are kept from consumers. Look: everything you do today will kill you. Your best bet is to become Amish, you're that worried.

There have been no upgrades to the human spirit in many thousand years.
The author seems displeased with the choice of money for God in the secular world. Communism is a quasi-religion, ironically enough. Marx is its Prophet, Lenin its first Pope, Stalin its (hopefully last) Inquisitor. (Note the proper use of 'its' in the previous sentence). As to why the verdict of history fell against it, here is a decent, if dry, read.
1) It could be "defensive indignation", where they figure that they will be held accountable in the courd of public opinion for not being up-in-arms about a "tasteless" piece of humor.
2) They are out for all publicity, negative or otherwise.
Agreed, boss. Yet, does the saddening lack of bandwidth in our wetare argue against an objective truth? I yawn at those who nihilistically toss off the concept of a Creator driving this whole thing, then pursue all manner of modern madness.
Religion and the concept of God(s) were started thousands of years ago to control people.
I can agree that this is a frequent motive, but you overlook some other ones. Many (possibly not yourself) have varying degrees of concern over where reality came from.
We'll simply never have an objective, inarguable answer until time travel is perfected and we can go back and debunk the spectrum of religious assertions.
Going back further in time, we can delve into the metaphysical territory before Creation and such.
Until that moment arrives, I'm all about the Jewish carpenter.
MS rides a fault line in the American psyche: we like winners but we hate the 800 pound gorilla.
I daresay anyone desiring to take potshots at MS ought to first try to support the breadth and depth of hardware and software that 'Doze does. So take a bow, MS, while standing knee-deep in the blood of your competitors.
MS might continue to float Apple via MS Office for the sake of anti-trust appearances. My question is, what similar strategies will MS pursue as the Open Source movement matures and fields office suites as robust for the casual user as MS Office?

I think the SourceForge is a better route. Cymen was right with the ? about starting with kernel development. Do you start running by competing in marathons? Thank you both.

Please tell me that linux isn't going to adopt the idea of having a "core" team like the BSD's do...
I had the privilege of hearing Margaret Thatcher speak once. Paraphrasing due to bad memory, she said "A committee is the absence of leadership."
While I someday hope to develop the skill to participate in discussions at this level, letting my dumb butt in the room would amount to a tremendous timewaste.
BTW, for those of us FNGs (Frickin' New Guys) who'd have entry level understanding of what is going on, and would like to do some Open Source for the fun and edification, where do I start?
You haven't ruled out violent death with this. The Reaper shall do his business with the sword, if he can't with time.
Given a greatly extended lifespan, I would stay in school and exit this reality with more degrees than a thermometer, having appreciated the work of the Almighty across the full bandwidth of His handiwork.
And thus, this is another pyrrhic victory, like gun control laws. Users who merely wanted to enjoy their favorite artists are inconvenienced, while scofflaws will just generate a work-around. Will the cranial-rectalitis never cease?
And forget the writing. Information should be entered into a computer directly with a thought. Evaluating the thought context is what they should concentrate on.
We have communications media as much to filter information as to move it. The keyboard takes a lot of the pain out of engineering something to drive/. Yet, pens and dead trees still trump the computer for wildly random inputs.
Voice recognition of the sort that will permit me to casually write my novel is still a little bit out there, and you want to jack right into my nervous system? I just don't think the bandwidth/storage/software will happen soon. Cool thought, though.
I have as many remote controls as I have component boxes in my living room.
Come up with an exhaustive list of living room gadget functions. Make a universal remote that (a) doesn't require configuration, (b) actually works across vendors.
I haven't seen any business cases, but I'm sure that broadband to the home would make money. Yet, my unscientific survey says that for every person with working Cable/DSL/Sattelite service I've heard of, there are another two who've enjoyed a prolonged tooth extraction.
Earthlink said that they would have Covad install DSL, but Covad said that Verizon had to rejigger the phone line. So Verizon says that I am at the outer range of the phone box. So Covad said that, well, they could go ahead and do the install and see if it works. So I said 'cancel my DSL order, let me know when this technology is ready.'
Ethernet to the hacienda would be swell. Please infrom me when actually available for install, and nary a moment sooner.
Is there an open source document specification around? Would something done in XML result in files of insane size? Of course, Mr. Softy won't support anything that might threaten market share...
Even Mr. Softy can't keep his formats straight, as I discovered when I dropped a Visio drawing into a Word2K.doc. I got a "No love for you" message at the location of the drawing {field} after opening it in Word97. Word97 and Word2K apparently use the same format, except for when they don't.
The issue with format converters is fidelity. There is always going to be some new feature that doesn't come through. Mr. Softy will throw a little entropy in there, just to find out who is determined to work around all the low-level tricks. What is required is management comittment to supporting alternative applications. Good luck.
Is one of these new Macs with OS X a viable bridge between the Linux I want to learn more about and the MS Orifice software that is admittedly a Redmond product but which, warts and all, drives the bulk of modern business? Can I light off this new Mac and do all of the kewel thingz a/. reader would want to do, but still toss off a few lines of Visual BaSick when I need to get my MS Access on? These are the questions driving my next hardware purchase. A small, yet noticable, legion of folks will drop Mr. Softy like a bad habit, given solid file compatibility.

2) They are out for all publicity, negative or otherwise.
Regarless, the rebuttal was way in there.
Questions:
a) When is USB available?
b) Ditto the keyboard.
c) Are there any battery life specs available?
d) That modem: can I buy two, and use one for my desktop, DSL and LSD being equally trippy in my neighborhood?
e) Is there a package deal for all these swell goodies? Vie fiele frogskins?

Think about that the next time you're wondering where your download money will come from.

It is cool to use "its" for possession, and "it's" as a contraction for "it is".
Bummer. Why? I've never looked at any RDBMS source code: is it just too gnarly and OS-specific under there to be portable?
