Well, on the subject of Child Pornography, I don't see how you can criticize the US's laws against it as draconian. Sometimes buddy, you do have to take a moral stand against a subject that is wrong and morally indefensible
Concerning Copyrights, granted, Certain elements in the US, I believe have perverted the original intention of the founding fathers over this issue, but at least the US and EU are trying synchronize copyright laws and there is room for challenge...dictatorships, like Zimba have no recourse for the accused...
and how soon you forget Germany's checkered past with Nazism, 55 million people did die in WWII because of Nazism, 6 million plus Jews, Gypsies, and others were systematically EXTERMINATED by the Nazi's...It just looks like Germany has decided, with more than good reason and evidence that Nazism has no place in ANY society. It is just their way of atoning for those sins and insuring it doesn't happen again nor is ever forgotten....The US on the otherhand, without that kinda of history has let Racist march (i.e. Skokie, IL...or any KKK rally) all in the name of free speech. So the US does allow a voice to even speech that we don't care to hear..
Does anybody know if/when the "patent" for Macrovision's so called "technology" actually expires?....just wondering since this is about all the company really has to offer...
I know in my area (that being Atlanta), one cannot get DSL without having a landline or a Cable Modem without getting cable
I was wondering if anybody sees this as the same type of monopolistic behavior MS was convicted of when they bundled IE with the OS?
For example: I have no need for a landline as I have a cell phone plan that gives me more than enough minutes, yet I have to shell out an extra 45 (lets face it, one can barely get a bare bones phone line for less than 45 bucks when all the extra taxes, fees, etc are tacked on) for a phone line so I can have a DSL line. A phone I really never use. Thus my DSL cost is really 85 bucks instead of just 40
isn't this the one of the issues this article might allude too? shouldn't the government bring a lawsuit against the cable/telcos accusing them of bundling? or forcing their un-related product on us just as MS was accused of?
"Want to see how divine's solutions create new business opportunities, increase loyalty and retention, and generate cost savings and additional revenue?"
I surely hope cutting pay isn't one of their solutions to increase loyalty and retention...shit..no wonder the company if fucked.
I was glad to see other people see the idiocracy in this stupid merger
I have always maintained TW never needed AOL, that it was AOL that needed/needs a content provider/Last mile owner to help AOL survive.
TW can sell their content to anyone if they so choose, just like Eisner had enough sense not to waste money on any portals (ala Yahoo) or ISPs for some illusion of synergy.
somebody sold the TW board and management a bill of worthless goods...I am still amazed at how supposely intelligent old economy men/women were duped by a bunch of carpetbaggers from Virginia? Steve Case is not that great of a manager or visionary..it was only the hoopla and frezny of the tech boom that made him look good....
at least Levin had enough sense to pick an old school boy as his successor. Parsons (mispelling?) comes from a background that is a bit more conservative than Case and his cronies and I am just waiting to see when Parsons is going to spin of the AOL albatross...or if he has the balls to do it...which I think he does.
TW owns the content, owns the cable systems,...what the hell does AOL really have? a large customer base? I would take a gander and say most of those customers are either a) already cable subscribers to one of TWs cable systems, so essentially, TW is re-buying their own customers b) AOL customers are not really the kinda customers I would think TW, or any content provider would want.
tsk, tsk..I wonder want Ted Turner said about the TW-AOL merger?
Levin: Ted, I am merging TW with AOl, this is the perfect syngery Ted: (in his southern drawl) what the fuck are you talking about? I think that ash on your forehead to making you more stupid that you already are...jesus, I shoulda bought TW and fired your ass when I had the chance.
Well, I took this damn course back in the mid 90's, and sounds like I had the exact same probs this kid had
I aced all the program assignments up until the last two. I tried my damndest to write programs that worked...or at least compiled...cause compilation back then was what at least earned you partial credit.
I had about 90% of the prog correct, but it was about 10% of the code I could not get to work properly. I saw the prof numerous times as well as the TA's. I begged for them to at least show me where my logic was wrong..or provide an analogy that might shed some light on why my prog was not working. I didn't want the "answer", but all I wanted was to be assisted in figuring out the correct path.
but neither would help in that respect. They said they couldn't/wouldn't cause then they would have to help all the students that were having trouble...
although, we couldn't seek outside help from students, another student, who was having trouble as well, and I did get together and worked on the assignment for days, almost figuring it out..until time ran out
I did turn in what I had and received partial credit because the prog did not work properly.
and guess what? I never ever did learn what I was doing wrong...or why my logic was incorrect. The prof never would go over with me even after the assignment
I wanted to know why...I believe students should know why they did something incorrectly so that they learn. So for me, I did not do the last two assignments correctly and never learned why I was doing them wrong. There seems to be something inherently wrong with this attitude at Tech and with others who lambast this kid...I can feel for the student who says he wants to Learn. And I seriously doubt if he really "cheated", that he would go to such extremes by getting his parents involved...and trust me, he should not be reamed for doing this...who the hell should he trust to turn to?
anyway, this reeks of the whole Zero Tolerance fad that seems to infect School Administrators from Grade School to College....
I am so glad I am out of school now....I could not imagine going through this constant BS
Well, so why should the government be protecting a local station's business model? They have no right to a profit, only to attempt to make a profit and if technology is such that it is time for local station's to evolve, then so be it. Some will probably go outta business...happens all the time, i.e. Wal Mart moves in, local stores go outta business...
now if farmer joe wants the farm report, well, this is the 21st century and he can and probably would get local info from the internet rather than waiting to watch some local news report....so in essence, local broadcast news is probably more obsolete than not....
First of all....if there is a god, it would be sexless, so in all theory, you know nothing of what would constitute a supreme being...
and as far as "scientific" perhaps, you would have to think outside the box to put "science" and "god" in the same sentence.
why would a supreme being be the pinnacle of creation? Of Life?...is it not a common theme in stories that the created eventually become as powerful or evolve to the same level as their creator?
Furthermore, a supreme being would have no reason to create different living things at once...no, instead they would create the environment that would be conducive to the creation of living things...
because lets face it, 4 billions years is a long time from our perspective because our lifespans are short...but a supreme being has not concept of time as they would "probably" never actually age in the physical sense and being immortal, would not be concerned with the passage of time....4 billions to them is a "blink" in a way...
which brings us, are humans going to eventually "play god"? in a way we already do, but we will, and rightfully so, be able to create life from nothing...because being able to do so is in a way the created having the same powers as the creator...the pinnacle of evolution..
do you want other examples of "set prices"...ok, practically every utility for one...is this a good thing? ask the residents in CA about their power bills...better yet, ask the residents in GA about their gas bills if you want to see what happens when utilities are allowed to set "market" prices..no a pretty thing.
also, whether you want to admit it or not, the "creators" have had too good a time with copyright for way too long. The founding fathers had it right with a much shorter copyright time period...The current time frame is outrageous...even patents are over after 17 years..why not copyright? do you think all those movies, music, etc could of been created if say "Shakespeare" was still under copyright? so much in hollywood is nothing but a derivative of his work, of the Grim Fairy tales (see every Disney movie), etc...same with Mozart, Beethoven etc...
..
so you see, if the US can "grant" copyrights, then the US can also put limitations on the works..because when it comes down to it. It IS the Government who is responsible for enforcing copyright laws and making copyright laws..and if part of making those laws in mandatory licensing..saying, we [the government] will protect your works with our backing if you follow some rules we make, then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that...NOTHING...
.
I agree wholeheartedly about fair use though. I for one do not want to live in a pay per view world....hmm, does that mean that the record companies are opposed to it, but only in a "Brair Rabbit" sort of way? Do they actually want mandatory licensing?..but don't want people to know that...hmmm
well, a clarification is due....America does not "allow" kids to carry guns..never has. The "kids" in Littleton obtained their guns illegally and no matter what laws there were, they still would of got the guns eventually.
if some deranged kid in Belgian wants to shoot up his classmates, he will get a gun if he really wants to. No matter how banned or controlled guns are...
I do admit one thing..we lock up enough people for "casual" drug use, mostly people who cannot afford a good lawyer (ruining their lives in the process...)... Do you or anybody really think any country is going to lock up people for copyright "personal" copyright infringement? especially when most infringers are under age 20? Hell no....well, at least one would hope not.
I had telocity, they completely sucked...
every Bell DSL and earthlink could not provide me with neither static IPs or nor could I have more than one computer hooked up at a time
so I finally, thankfully found speakeasy.net..they use covad and from the time I put my order in and it was finally hooked up was 14 days...did you read that??? 14 days...and I was able to get 5 (with up to 10) static IPs...it has been months and I never..ever have had a problem with Covad or speakeasy.net...none...
so, whatever ISP your worked for must of completely sucked from the get go..it is obviously your company did not know what they were doing...
frankly, I am thankful for speakeasy.net and covad..else, I would be stuck with lousy Telco DSL service..
Ok, you make the reference..but I guarantee 90 % of the geeks here never read the books Pushme-Pullya was mentioned in..why don't you explain where it is from and what is the theory behind it..and not to mention, credit the author too...
I, like an idiot, suggested to my dad to get a G4, since he did alot of digital photography. Normally, I am a win2k/linux advocate, but I "Thought" from all that I heard, perhaps Apple had a better product for what my Pop wanted to use it for
Big, Big, Big mistake. I feel like a complete ass. My father has had nothing but complete trouble with the piece of crap. The mouse locks up every hour..no,the whole damn machine locks up every hour. The scsi card already had to be replaced and same thing with the HD..at least that is what CompUSA's shitty support said and did.
of course, it still locks up every bloody hour or so for no particular reason. My father has tried and tried and tried and tried to get Apple support and sales to either pay to have a complete diagnostic on it. (NOPE, they said "HE" would have to pay the 100+ bucks for CompUSA to run this Diagnostic crap on the Motherboard and only after that would they consider replacing the motherboard)
he also tried to get them to Replace the whole machine..again, the only thing they would offer is the damn diagnostic test which he would have to pay for.
and now here is the kicker, although there is a 90 return window, because he took into compUSA to get the SCSI card replace (took 2 weeks), then back again to get the HD replace (took 4 fucking weeks), he was push beyond that 90 day window...so now he cannot even get his money back and APPLE will not..NO, they REFUSE to remedy the situation
To give a comparision, when my dads 1 1/2 year old Dell Laptop went kaput, they [DELL] flew in a TEchnician to replace the motherboard, no questions asked. Now that, is unbelievable customer service. Something APPLE severely lacks
We are still trying to get Apple to do something, but everytime we call and try to move up the management ladder we always get "they will call you back" which they never EVER do. So frustrating
I feel so bad recommending this to my father who pretty much has a 5g paper weight on his desk. I will never ever recommend Apple again after this fiasco. If anybody has any pull at Apple, please let me know. I would love to bring some Closure to this.
