Well, yes, but that isn't really a power-saving solution. Besides, don't you think that leaving all your personal data on a 24/7 server is a bit risky?

By all means, that seems like a risky operation. If they kill of their PC gaming division, they lose a large part of their 'entertainment customers' as well (those that use a pc mainly for multimedia, games and social networking). Once these customers are forced into the console market, Microsoft loses their grip on the market, as they are not the dominant console player.

  13. Same story over again on Dysfunctional Console Industry Struggles For New Profit Centers · · Score: 5, Insightful

I believe the console market is in the same position as the arcade halls were back in the early '90: filled with 'mature companies', struggling to provide added value to their product over the then relatively new home consoles. If the console market wants to survive, they really need to move away from copying the success factors from the PC market, and provide added value to their product that the PC industry can't easily copy, just like surviving arcade manufacturers are doing nowadays. And, while I agree it is hard to find such elements, they certainly exists. The wii-type thing was a good start. Just adding a faster internet modem and high end graphics card isn't going to do it this time.

They indeed provide a very closed and locked product, but that should not be a problem for the business world? I think most companies just want a product which has proven itself, is compatible with their legacy systems and will be supported for a long time. The fact that the whole 'supply chain' (if I can call it that way) is controlled by RIM is not really a minus at that point; it was moreover the reason why BB's had faster email and web response times than the competition. Most of the people on /. criticize RIM for not having the same open policy towards developers for their system, and not 'being like the iphone'. I personally don't see how those two factors would influence their sales in the corporate world. Games and silly applications are not what managers are waiting for, and useful applications will find their way on the device (eventually, when they passed the 'hype' stage).
