The fact the matter is, EVERY software project has stuff like that.

I wouldn't trust a software (much less a closed source software) written by anyone (including NASA, govs, whatever) to do anything like this. And personally, I can't believe anyone who has worked in the industry would.

And that is, regardless of the project management techniques, reviews, whatever.

One guy did say that there was a bug somewhere and that a patch existed...No one knows what patch or where it is though.

I agree that SF might be a good idea, but I'm kind of hoping things could stay the same : their own server with all their setups, great download speed and many mirrors.

Can't a university or even better yet a company like RedHat & cie. help those guys ? I mean, it can't be a bad thing to help such a project. Many (somewhat hardcore) geeks go to your site every day. That oughta be good traffic for someone somewhere.

The references to previous episodes are numerous (and often funny) and that's part of the reason why someone who watches once in a while won't enjoy it.

Once More With Feelings, while a stand-alone episode still has so many references that i'm sure it isn't as good if you haven't seen the rest. Buffy's death, her emotional status at that point, willow and tara, etc...

The ultimate proof that occasional watching won't do it is the many posts here that says the show has no dept, that it's a soap, etc...

If they only knew...it's about as un-soapish (whoa, new word !) as it can get.

Everything on my workstation was compiled manually by me, including the shell, the compiler, X, etc...

I have quite a few (computer-related) books at home and I mostly agree with you. O'Reilly and Wrox are usually quite good although it's important to note that they are quite different.

Of the 20-odd O'Reilly books that I have, most are quite good. The same applies to Wrox although Wrox's are usually more "tutorial-like" and as such better for a begineer. I feel the animals are usually more in depth and the writting is somewhat better (probably explained by the fact that there's 20 authors on a typicial Wrox book).

My only other complaint about Wrox is that it looks like they reduced the quality of the paper they use latelly.

All in all, both are goods and are my first choices except where there is some high quality hardcover available.

Bible books are a big no-go as is mostly everything that starts with "exceptionnal", "bible", "unleashed", "dummies", "whatever".

  12. Concise dead-tree books on What Kind of Books do You Want? · · Score: 1

I buy a lot of computer-related books..usually something like 1 or 2 a month. For me, the e-books versus deadtree discussion books is a non issue. I can't stand ebooks. I really really prefer real books even if that means i'm going to be paying 2 times as much.

As for the subject, I'm interested in a lot of things. Mostly system programming & network admins. To me, what really matters is the content of the book. I really like those books with the animal on top :) I think that 4 out of 5 times, they are quite exceptionnal.

Oh yeah, and I really wish there was more good-quality books out there (like hardcovers) on subjects that really matters. The C++ reference gold edition by the author of C++ (can't spell it's name) is a good example of this.

And if you are from wrox, make smaller books and pay 1 or 2 authors to do them. These new books are much less interesting than they used to be. And 20-something authors on a book makes a book that`s hard to read with no continuity.

  14. Will anyone pay for this ? on Rent Music Over the Net · · Score: 2, Interesting

I'm kinda confused by this. I mean, I always said that I would pay to get music from the net (as in per-song fee) but I would never pay to rent a music on the net. This is not like a movie-rental business because when you rent a movie, you usually don't care to see it more than once or twice, but when you like a song, you're going to listen to it quite a lot.

They are probably going to fail with this plan and then come up with the usual excuse that the web is "not a good business place and blablabla".

Maybe one day someone will realise that with good ideas and a somewhat logic price-tag, the web CAN be a good place to sell stuff. It just isn't the "promised land" dot-coms seemed to think 3 years ago.

We know this. The question is, why don't THEY. I mean, you'd figure that with so many people working for these giants, at least a few of those executives or managers would have guessed it by now.

I wonder what will happend then....is the internet going to become literally an electronic version of what we can buy in stores ? You can "help" by teaching sys admins to apply patches when they come out and possibly by running a safer OS. (what's the name again ? pretty sure it ends with "ux".)

A browser that is standards-compliant is very important because then we can create web sites and ignore those non-compliants browsers. When every web developper does this, everyone will be able to use the browser *they* like on whatever platform *they* like.

I'm up to the point where I use Mozilla most of the time on Windows (mostly at work : we are a *gulp* Microsoft-Devoted shop -- I'm working on that) and Mozilla all the time on Linux. I did try Konq. and I think it's a really nice browser.

What bothers me here is that the article seem to say that "video games are bad for your child because while they play it, they're not learning as fast as they could". That might be true, but I think a kid needs to do something else in life than reading and learning. When kids are playing cowboys outside with "normal" toys, are their brain working more ? Is this better for the kid ?

As with everything else, the best is to get a compromise between the "no games" and "games all the time".

I think that this is the article's biggest problem. It basically says something everybody knows. You just need to go with your logic.
