    Something that seems to have been missed in all this fury, it that British ISP are vulnerable to the threats of large copyright owners because there is no safe harbour provision as provided for by the DMCA. Large ISP's like BT or Virgin have the financial resources to fight, medium sized ISPs like Karoo or small scale ISPs cannot afford to spend millions defending themselves in the high court.

    Kingston Communications is to drop its hardline approach of immediately cutting the Internet connection of people caught illegally downloading films and music.

    As Hull resident and Karoo broadband customer, I can tell you things are never as simple as they appear. The people who get cut off are those that are saturating their bandwidth, and have ignored multiple warnings, first by email and then by letter. I know lots of people file sharing on a limited basis that have never been cut off. Though a few saturating their bandwidth have received warning email and letters.

    Wikimedia foundation had an income of $7.75 Million last year and retained earning of $8m from previous years. The NPG had an income of £2.24 Million last year. So relatively speaking Wikimedia foundation is the rich one stealing from the poor one.

    However the US is a signatory of the Berne Convention.

    The Berne Convention requires its signatories to recognize the copyright of works of authors from other signatory countries.

    Recognising the copyright of a work created outside the the US is a different set of circumstances to refusing to grant a copyright to a digital photo created in the US.

    A court might consider a work created and copyrighted outside of the US differently to a work denied copyright in the US under Bridgeman Art Library v. Corel Corp.

    ... cars can only be properly and safely operated by mechanics, engineers, and aficionados? Obviously, that is not true. Cars are designed to be relatively simple to operate, yet can be highly reliable, safe, and low maintenance. At least for the majority of their lifetime, for the average person.

    Car Drivers need a licence to ensure they are properly and safely operated.
    Car Drivers can be sanctioned for dangerous or irresponsible practices.
    Car Drivers require insurance to compensate people who suffer a lost caused by incompetence or recklessness of the Driver.
    Cars must be regularly serviced and maintained by trained experts.
    Cars must be registered & require regular safety inspections.

    Some similar practices might avoid most of the problems with have with irresponsible PC owner/operators. e.g. worms, virus, UCE/UBE, phishing, fraud, DDOS.

    Names matter a lot more than you might expect. Did you know that names perceived as a different enthnicity face discrimination even during blind tests ? Did you know that Children whose name appears earlier in the alaphabet are more successful? Or that common names like Pete & Paul tend you towards an average acheivements in life ? Name choice has a much larger impact on children than most parents know.

    It saddens me to think that so many people are that shallow. It no longer surprises me that people would risk their financial stability to have a baby with a particular hair color. But it does still depress me.

    What saddens me is that somebody should be so shallow they believe the accumulation of wealth for wealth's sake is somehow virtuous.

    The natural purpose of the drive to succeed is to enhance the prospects of your children.

    You are simply a custodian of your genes for your future generation.

    Try reading the The Selfish Gene and you might get it.

    Shock, horror! The religious right has a problem with a process of natural selection in a civilised world too safe for the survival of the fittest to thrive. Rich successful geeks will be able to afford to ensure their smart children are also beautiful & sporty. Those meatheads too stupid to appreciate the value of this won't benefit. A delicious irony if every there was one.

    I've said it before and will say it again, natural selection is a meta process; change the environment to make it safe and natural selection it's self will evolve.

    I'll bet my karma that this turns out to be an urban myth and received counter knowledge in a year.
