I've been working IT since before we got married (loooong time ago) and we had to experience all the "good" stuff that comes with it (relocations, even across countries and continents), long hours (not too often though), weekend support calls, working from home, weeklong business trips, you name it. Fortunately she has been very understanding and never made a big deal out of it. And I was making up to her for it.
We are divorced now (totally my fault, but job had nothing to do with it). We have a shared custody of our two kids and I probably spent as much time with them as she does (fortunately they are grown up and can take care of themselves if both parents are busy).
It's not your job that ruins your marriage, it's you neglecting basic communications and not realizing that certain sacrifices by your partner need to be rewarded. Of course it does help to have a spouse who does understand that sometimes you have to take this support call or spend weekend fixing bugs.
There's no way anyone gonna make a manager out of me. Team lead - yeah, been there, done that. There's no way I gonna deal with all the issues typical manager deals with, I like my coding too much. How many managers do you know who still writes code?
I wasn't directly on the team, but I was in close contacts with developers (4 guys at best time, 2 at worst), so I'm pretty aware of what's involved. It's one hell of a task. It's not clear if ITA guys do a real-time verification of flights availability which adds extra 5-10 sec per flight (at least). But as a note it seems like a lots of hardware and code. Our code was written in C and was using one 4-way IBM H80 to do the algorithm and one E30 to communicate to the Sabre/Galileo/Worldspan. It was guaranteed to give at least answer withing 50 sec and it worked about 90-95% of the time... And there wasn't ever single mathematician on the team.
Unfortunately project was closed month ago (damn big bosses - don't know cool thing when they see one).
Well we'll just wait for "The Big One" when California will just sink into see and voila - instant beach in Phoenix Arizona:)

When you are fighting guerilla it doesn't matter how well equipped or trained are you... You have to wipe out ENTIRE population to win and I'm not sure US is ready to do that...
Oh and one more thing - aren't you forgetting Vietnam where MUCH better equipped and trained US army was driven out of the country by guerilla Vietcong? Do you really want another 'Nam?
In case you are not aware DECENT public transportation available only in few cities in US (I presume original poster is from US). I always rode buses in winter and my bike in summer back in Europe, but once I moved here - both cities I lived in (substitute your favorites here) - if you don't have a car - you DEAD...
I don't care if "free" program installs bunch of crap, what pisses me off is when program I PAID for installs it (kids game on windows throw bunch of pronfighter software on desktop). I like my desktop clean - keep your dirty hands off it!!!
... in the library ...

Are you ready to get the pants sued off you by relatives of all those people?
