This is deffenitely not the first case. I don't understand how they could say this. The doctors that were carring for him said that there were many cases in the US (a little over 20) and some cases overseas.

One of the sections should be called something like Care and maintenance. All laptop manuals I have had tell how to properly clean the screen (lite detergent on a rag). Also, the screen should be covered with a protective coating (they all have a polarized piece of plastic film) that should keep the transistors from being exposed to the outside, so your friend probably dripped water inside or something...unless it ate through the plastic.

Just turn it off and pull the battery when you clean it...if you get water in it, don't worry about it, just wait until you think the water inside is dry before you turn it back on.

A great place for info is at the ESD Association's website. More specifically, there page about ESD
    http://www.esda.org/aboutesd.html

This page has information on what causes ESD, ESD testing, and how to control esd in places like your work.

If the machine is automated, I wouldn't think it would be a problem, as long as those pesky charged humans don't touch anything.

If the machine is automated, they most likely have ESD precautions built in, such as discharging any belts that move components, etc...

The real questin you have to ask is if it is worth it. If you have a circuit that you made for $10, and it get's inspected by a human...how do you know that in the process of being inspected the person didn't kill it... not only will the customer not be happy about recieving a dead product, which will hurt you buisness, but that's $10 dollars down the drain... So it has a lot to do with product reliability and cost saving.

I personally don't think that you need all of the things you mentioned...
If your sitting at a little solder station or where many components are going through your hands, then I would deffenitely wear a wrist strap...it will pay for itself even after one kill (assuming about $10)...

As for the flooring, in order for that to work, you would need conductive shoes, so they go hand in hand...but I think that's overdoing it by quite a bit. As for the humidity, if your in a place that has very very low humidity, then you would need some kind of control because you, and many things around you, will accumulate a charge very quickly...and, I would assume that it would be a lot cheaper than buying all the flooring and shoes, because, in your situation, you wouldn't need both.

Like that web page says, don't use a qwerty keyboard while you are learning! You will unteach yourself everytime, trust me... :) Convert your keyboard at work and anywhere else you can.

If I get onto my any other windows computers with a qwerty layout, I ussually just go to the keyboard settings and make it so alt+shift switches between layouts. But you won't be able to do this until you get comfortable with it.

And on the issue of most other computers having qwerty...you will be able to type qwerty fine once you learn dvorak (as long as you can type it ok now)...it just takes about 10 minutes of contant typing on the qwerty keyboard to get used to. When people are watching me type real real slow while looking at the keyboard, I explain to them that I just use a different more superior layout! hehehe

If your going to change your layout to dvorak, remember that all you bios passwords(I thought I just forgot them) and non windows dos consoles will be in qwerty...

Also, with a laptop, you could use it for about three hours (or buy two batteries to double time) during times that you can't afford to use power from your preciouse batteries..

Also, maybe there is some way that you could set up a battery or two made only for the laptop...it would be a nice way to regulate how much power you use. Just get some deep cycle marine batteries for it...

The cone you are speaking of is most likely the nulls from the antenna pattern. If it is a radio station, it most likely has a dipole...this means that it will transmitt in a donut shape, with inside of the donut stretched to the center point...so if you are fairly close to the antenna, the signal will be extremely weak because the antenna (if it were horizontal campared to the ground (horizontal polarization)) does not transmit well in horizontal directions.

Here you can see a dipole antenna pattern, and many more, and the cone you are speaking of.

What would the benefit be over not having one compared with having one? Until they come up with something that almost all computers support, is small, portable, and just big enough to tranfer small files, I think they should keep it.

If you don't have a network, and no floppy, your screwed if you want to get a file to another computer, unless you burn it on a cd of course.

There have been many many many times when I have written a report at home, and taken it to school to continue working on it. The only alternative would be to email it to yourself (which some internet access places don't even allow) burn it on a cd (that would get old, and if you wanted to save it, and there wasn't a computer with a burner around, your real screwed), or put it on some server (which again can be a pain with places that censor what you can do (if they would only allow access to ftp.exe).

I constantly use my floppy, and so do many people I see. I use it to get my blank or broken hard drive up and running, and many many other uses. Sure, if your not writting or breaking hard drives you might not use it often, but its a REAL life saver if you need to get a fairly small (with todays standards) file from one computer to another.

I'm real currious of what other people use in place of a floppy. Mainly for school or buisiness documents that you want to get from home to school/work or the other way around.
