    Could. Not. Agree. More.

Someone (wish I could remember who. Any help?) once said that religion is the "Opiate of the masses". People turn to it because it gives them hope in otherwise hopeless lives. People turn to religion rather than trying and improving their situation themselves. Most people are not zealots but are basically sheep. It's the zealots that you have to worry about.

Unfortunately there is no way to dissuade Zealot types. Provide a rational argument and they will most likely label you a heathen and refuse to listen to you. You are going against their beliefs. You can not argue against someone's beliefs. It just doesn't work.

The extremest "Right to Lifers" come to mind on this one. These people who consider "all life to be sacred", have no problem bombing clinics and shooting doctors for what they consider the greater good. These people are terrorists as well and are just as bad as any Palestinian suicide bomber.

I support military action against the appropriate party.

    >the CIA is involved with the Palestinians, too. It's just that the CIA supports Arafat, and Palestinians do not. The PLO is a CIA-supported, >pseudo-government that doesn't care whether Palestinians have a homeland

First of all I just want to say PLEASE GIVE BLOOD IF YOU CAN. It doesn't matter where in the states you are, it matters. To use a misplaced quote, 'Just do it'.

Secondly, I express my deepest sorrows and condolences to anyone that has lost or had a loved one or friend injured in this attack. I does not need to be said how reproachful such a thing is.

But to bring this back to a Slashdot discussion, I feel that this will mean that there will be quite a restriction on some civil liberties as a result of this. I have no idea what they will be but they can't be good. The only thing that I can picture at this time (I'm quite numb after this day so forgive me if I don't express myself rationally, and I've had a couple of beers so that might explain my spelling). Anyway the only thing that I can see are Soviet style travel restrictions. I don't know what else they can do. Well I do remember being in France years ago when police would stand on the corner with automatic weapons. However, this would not have helped prevent what happened today. But with the conservites in the whitehouse, who knows what will happen. But you know, I don't think it would matter if the Dems were in the WH either at this point. Unfortunately something symbolic will have to be done. But will it be the right thing?

Sorry for the disconnected nature of this comment.

One more thing: Where are the Clintons? NY is Hillary's state after all.

    Peace to all

Duh. The comic shop I used to work at (Action Comics. Quite an original name, no?) did this with the new comics. They were along the back wall so people would have to walk past all of the games/toys/cards and other assorted whatnot to get their biweekly X-Men fix. This isn't bad for the consumer. Sure you've got to walk an extra 15 feet or so (God forbid) but you also get to be exposed to different crap that you might not have been exposed to before (impulse buy!). Unfortuantely, this did not work for Action and they are now long out of business.

They were created so the Japanese car makers could break into the market with their high end offerings. Like it or not no one would pay $70M for a Toyota LS430. A Lexus LS430 however...

My main point was that percieved brand status doesn't translate to computer stuff (for the most part, there are still brand zealots out there), therfore his entire arguement is invalid.

True regarding the performance of the two cars. But if you drive a Lexus people think you're successful. If you drive a Toyota you're just another schmuck. The problem with your arguement is that you are disregarding how the two separate brands are percieved. Automakers do this with countless models. Honda/Acura Accord/TL, Nissan/Infiniti Pattfinder/QX4, Toyota/Lexus Land Cruiser/RX430. If you're worried about bang for the buck performance on a car, go out and get a camaro (ick).

Anyway, your car comparison doesn't fly when put in the same context of the article. If you buy a 1.4 Athlon vs a 1.33 Athlon you'll end up saving about 6 second of kernal compile time (read the article). If you buy a Lexus instead of a Toyota you're buying status.

My realator was faxing me 4 or 5 listings a day of things she thought I might be interested in. In additon to actually being able to find what you're looking for (and the time savings associated with that), a realtor is invaluable when it comes to little things. Stuff I never would have thought to ask about she asked. What kind of insulation is in the house? What kind of fixtures are they? Stuff like that. Some people might know about all that Home Depot junk, but I certainly don't. The only questions I was prepared to ask were "Can I get a Direct TV dish?" and "What about DSL service?".

Bottom line: First time buyer? Get a realtor.
