    I had some dealings with a startup company that was exploring similar ideas. They were planning to put these simulators into retail stores (ie. GAP and kin). One of the biggest problems that they got stuck on was how do you accurately model the persons body without making them stip naked and put on a MoCap suit?

    "What good is spending 350-400 billion a year on the military if you only spend 20 billion a year on public schools?"

    Whats the good of having a well educated population that is unable to defend itself? Some power mad asshole decides "Oh boy! Suckers ripe for the plucking!"

    Think about this for a minute. We are in a democracy here, which means these average joes from public schools control (ideally) the direction of the whole country. Maybe it would help to think of this on a human scale. Would you prefer us to be like a fool with a bazooka or an inteligent person with a rifle?

    Actually, at one time, it was expected that for every million dollars you spent on a construction project you would lose one worker. This was sort of a rule of thumb. You can take a look at the brooklyn bridge casualty list as an example here.

    I know that most of you guys aren't going to believe this, but I was watching a show a while back extolling the virtues of the TRS-80 portable (there is some info here). Basically, it was so rugged that people were still using them for non-speed critical applications. Heck, in this show one guy actually THREW ONE AT THE FLOOR. No, it didn't shatter, it bounced and THEN BOOTED! Try that with your Dell :)

    Actually, there are a number of ways to ensure that the data is non-volatile. Flash or battery backed RAM come to mind. Bitmicro (www.bitmicro.com) is a vendor that currently sells non-volatile flash based drives. I checked them out a little while ago, but found that it was a bit too pricey for me still.

    I'd suggest getting a smallish (1gb or so) flash drive for your windows/linux/amiga/whatever partition, and use some monstrous drive to store all your media files.

    Has anybody ever thought of using a yes/no checkbox for each candidate? It would work like this:

    Do you think x is suitable for president?
    x=bush NO
    x=gore YES (holding nose)
    x=nader YES
    x=buchanan NO
    x=browne NO

    Consider if 60% of people are torn between gore and nader.

    Current system:
    40% Bush (Winner)
    30% Gore
    30% Nader

    Yes/no boxes:
    60.00001% Nader (Winner-Hey its my fantasy, I can do whatever I want)
