  1. i'd say yes, to all, if you're doing something that you don't want others to see, then onus is on you to do it on your own device.

if it is their's then they can do whatever the hell they want with it. If it's yours same thing. in the case of BYOD, depends on who actually owns it, you cede certain considerations and rights when you opt in to a discount in my mind.

the phone, laptop and vpn router, are you caring for these things outside of normal business hours to do business-related activities? or for personal use.

i'm quite sure nobody would be upset with you if you wait until the normal business hours to go about trouble-shooting your business provided devices.

No, you have the right to be both a bigot and to speak out against bigots. Which is what troubles me. The problem isn't that, it's that what has happened is that EVERYBODY is speaking out against the same bigot now. Before this cultural revolution of speed and fury this was fine.

Again, saying something stupid should get you consequences, you might be reprimanded, lose a connection, etc. You might be fired, you might have to move.

But you have a chance to learn and to start over.

now, this shit will follow you forever, and the "swarm" is so reactionary, that it might be a misunderstanding, but your life is still screwed.

And it troubles me, because everybody is well within their rights, but it's so ugly.

should a man lose half a billion dollars because he was bigotted in a private conversation that he didn't know was recorded? he might have been a horrible racist at other times, but that's not why he lost half a billion... he lost it because of what he said in the privacy of his own home.

free speech is fine, but Brendan Eich was as bigotted as roughly 50 percent of the population was at the time. He donated to a political campaign.

Fuck me, i'd actually push for undisclosed donor lists if this is one of the outcomes of people actually supporting political causes they believe in.

He was on the wrong side of the issue. period. Is that enough to crucify a man now?

are we going to vilify half of america over gun control, abortion? who else is going to lose their livelihood for being wrong?

about it being a wrong assertion. he's simply pointing out that islam is violent and destructive. So might every other religion. Which i would argue is true. They're all violent and destructive.

Just so happens that every other belief system at this moment, doesn't have worshippers that actively plot my demise. I don't know, that kind of makes them special.

this is my pet cause, yes, it's in a different tier than lynch mob, but the suppression of opinion is in the same class. People might not have the same fear of death as back in the civil rights movement, but they have the same fear of loss of economic livelihood.

And yes, you might say, "good those dirty racists should be forced onto the street" because that's where this is going, people organizing to drive individuals out of, jobs, out of homes, out of society, but what happens when the noun following that "dirty" swings around to describe you? or your friend?

will you still feel the same way about how our society allows itself to bully those "of different beliefs and opinions" when you or your friend are the ones being bullied?

Remember, Brendan Eich was forced out of a position he was eminently qualified for, because he donated to a political movement, and would not recant his religious beliefs.

bleh... you just made me agree with krauthammer.

  13. don't know, been looking into it. last time i went to europe was a long time ago, and i've never had to enter the US as a non-US citizen :)

anyway, don't see the hassle of 15 dollar fee, i'd consider that similar to the hassle of booking a flight/accomodations at destination. visa waiver/electronic should take care of the majority of business travellers and tourists. and being denied entry, like these people seems like a vanishingly small fraction of travelers.

If you try and visit too often for too long, they might make you get a tourist visa. but if you've got no criminal record, and want to visit for a couple weeks or visit family, i don't think there's much hassle there.

again, i can't speak of that.

I pointed out the size of the US to weaken your argument that it was easy to visit 20 different countries in the EU. in terms of different ecosystems/parks and regional flavors, each state you have access to once you get into the US has its own distinct character. I'm saying, maybe not in terms of history, but in terms of cultural distinction it's less cut and dry than you make it out to be.

visiting the west coast vs visiting the east coast, north south, midwest, etc. are all going to be pretty different experiences.

We've got deserts, swamps, dormant volcanoes, flatlands, forests etc. there's a lot to see for "one" country is all i'm saying. And it's not super fair to compare it to, say, belgium.

  14. Neither do most of us, European citizens (if I read the serious media and various polls correctly, ).

    ...

Not necessarily. A "speedbump" might as well lead to tighter integration. It's as it is with real speedbumps: they *do damage you and your car badly, if you drive over them with 140 km/h. If you drive over them with 20 km/h, they may lead you to permanently alter your driving behaviour in *that street.

i'd say it's more likely to fall apart then cede power to a central office. National identity is too strong. The only reason the american "currency union" has worked at all is because of the migration of money from richer states to poorer states, typically urban to rural. Until france and germany are willing to subsidize the PIGS, i don't see it happening. and france I already consider underperforming, and germany I already consider unwilling...

  15. well my point there was more that comparing the US to say, sweden is a grossly negligent ignoring of scale.

the US as a whole is comparable to the EU as a whole. and some states are comparable to countries. Except germany and france, maybe. California is only as "big" as italy.

also, unfortunately, because you're not as centralized... you almost got fucked by Greece... BY GREECE.

I don't think it's possible to maintain this half-assed state the EU is in right now indefinitely. We'll hit another speedbump, and the EU will fly apart.

  16. you've gotta remember, the US spans a continent, with all the weird climates that that entails. And it covers roughly the same area as europe and has about 70 percent of the population of the EU.

comparing the EU and the US as a whole is generally a valid comparison when talking about a whole host of issues. challenges in health care, defense, scientific output, GDP.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

to us, you're like a loose loose loose confederation of states that in the past really really really wanted to kill the fuck out of each other.

except you've got a currency union that's not going to work in the long run, because the central body isn't empowered to redistribute wealth from stronger "states" to weaker ones. As the federal government does with lopsided taxing and spending between states over here. We're also americans first, regardless of ethnic origin or current residence.

yes to all this, and above. that does not mean you don't lose something for knowing the twist is coming. i'm not saying it's the most important part, i'm not even saying it's an equal part. about actors and scripts.

for every movie you pointed out, where an actor improvised a line nowithstanding, i could probably name a movie the actors been in that is irredeemable shit. Because of a shitty script. Hell, how many times have you thought "he's doing it for the paycheck" every time you think that it's because the script isn't up to the quality of the acting.

The script just sets the upper bounds on what a movie can be. Like canvas size.
