You must not remember the NT SP6 fiasco. That thing broke complete systems, they had to release SP6a to get anything to work.

If that had been automatically updated, there would be a lot of people in a world of hurt.

I highly doubt that mainstream media is calling it a "Windows virus" in order to diiferentiate it from a "Linux virus," or "Mac virus." They are trying to differentiate it from an "email virus." They are labeling it because of it's entry point, not OS.

  5. 4,000 GeForce FX 5800 Ultra cards not FX GPUs on CEE2003: A One-Vendor Trade Show · · Score: 1

IIRC, it was a problem getting a decent/profitable yeild of chips that would support the high clock speeds they were shooting for on the 5800 line. But I seem to remember reading somewhere that nVidia was still going to release their more moderate cards (5200 and 5600, maybe?) sometime in the future.

I can't find any of the articles I remember reading this, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. ;)

  7. stop your whining on New Bill Would Restrict Sale of Video Games to Minors · · Score: 1

#1. As I saw stated before, minors have very limited rights in the eyes of the courts/constitution. There is LESS than a snowball's chance in hell that the courts would overturn such a law.

#2. The jury is still out about the life imitating art (or I guess not art, if video games aren't speech and art is) in the ways of videogames. But I would think most people would agree that it is an influence, especially on impressionable minors. Maybe not the primary cause/explanation for the violence in schools, etc., but a factor however small.

#3. Most arguements that I have seen on Slashdot complain about the government "parenting." I agree in a utopian society it would be great if the government didn't have to, but there are so many children out there that aren't looked after properly that I would rather the govenement do something like this than an already disturbed child get one of these games and that further him down that road. (Notice, I did not say drive him to violence or anything of the sort. But, I hope that most people would agree a game like GTA III could not be healthy for an already disturbed child.)

    #4 (or 3 continued).
I think that the parents of the minor that can enjoy and place such games in the fantasy world they belong could easily make the choice to buy these games for their child, thereby the parents are doing the parenting. (and hey guys, if they have to go into the store to get the game for you, there is probably a better chance they will pay for it also ;) )

  9. Questions about HDTV on To HDTV or Not to HDTV? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I've also been looking into HDTVs. And here is a question I've wanted to ask somebody, and hopefully there is someone here that might be able to answer it.

Which looks better, 720p or 1080i? I've noticed that a lot of HDTV don't do 720p and "upgrade" any 720p signals to 1080i. How does this affect the image quality?

As far as I can find, he best HDTV (well technically it's a "monitor" b/c it has no built-in tuner; you need to use a cable box or VCR or something) I've seen is from Princeton. Thier AF3.0HD looks to be the best one out there. And you can find it for less than half of the $4000 MSRP online right now. CNET has a good review of the Princeton Ai3.6HD. (I think the main difference is the aspect ratio between this one and the AF3.0HD).
If anyone owns one of these tell me what you think.
