1. this is old news. WU has classified IP as PII for a long time now.
2. Yes - it is exactly like your phone number. Given your phone number, I stand a very good chance of figuring out who you are - thus it is personally identifying.
The reason that this is a bad thing to store is that I can get a court order to request all the search records from Yahoo that were made from your IP address - thus showing that you did indeed search for 'male escorts NYC'.
Having it noted as PII means that nobody can store it (in search logs for example) without your express permission, and thus if it ain't logged, the search query can't be associated with your good name.
whatever about the cost of purchasing, running and maintaining one of these - I can't imagine any insurance company taking on the risk that the pilot won't do serious damage to property and by-standers.
Sony is also highly profitable - even though it was selling the consoles at a loss initially, it more that recoups that loss from royalties on the games.
Nintendo is the only manufacturer that sells the console at a profit. This is a far cry from it being the only profitable manufacturer.
Reagan actually offered to include the soviet union in the development of the SDI (see his letters to the head of USSR at the time).
I'm no fan of Reagan, but it seems that his biggest concern was putting the atomic genie back in the bottle - and he wanted all superpowers to understand that SDI would render the nuclear weapons useless, and then they wouldn't bother with them...
guess that doesn't cover the bombs tho, just the missiles, etc...
I mean come on, there's a way for them to bilk the artist out of more of their earnings, and they didn't do it?
Robbie Williams signed an 80 million pound ($130,000,000) contract with EMI (bbc link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/267 3983.stm).
For an artist who is virtually unknown in the US, that's enormous! I can only speculate that part of the contract included 'advances' on expected revenue from his tours...
I know I'd rather have cash in hand than gamble on the vagaries of teeny pop tastes...

you are justifying innumerable atrocities because of the 'Cold War' - please justify the Cold War.
What the fuck does America care if Chile elects a socialist democratic government? and yet you still go in there and depose Salvador Allende, and the result is Gen. Pinochet and over 3,000 'disappeared'... justify that.
SoftImage is now owned by Avid (I believe) - Microsoft bought them, forced the NT port out the door (probably broke up the drive behind the SGI product), and then sold them to Avid...
I believe Windows is the primary platform for XSI...
There's a huge requirement for these where people have to demonstrate graphically intensive applications - like games:-)
The company I work for had a computer custom built into an aluminium suit-case - a 'luggable' - so that we'd have decent graphics cards for demonstrating our products. A laptop is far far easier to transport, and far cheaper - and generally you can plug in somewhere when doing a presentation!
Why can they release it in Japan before they can release it here (by several months apparently)... I'm assuming the hardware is the same (?) so why did they have to push back their NA release date?
It's so they have enough units built to satisfy demand... they employ just in time manufacturing so the components are as cheap as possible.
They stagger release so that each region has a huge number of units to satisfy the initial hysteria...
I saw a documentary the other day about the design and construction of the Empire State Building. Apparently it was supposed to be just 86 storeys, but in order to be taller than the Chrysler building they added a mooring mast for 'lighter-than-air-ships' to the top...
they even showed artists impressions from the time...
unfortunately the plan was abandoned as people were unwilling to walk the floating gangway from the gondola to the top of the Empire State Building;-)
'One organisation reporting all the news'... like the Russian News Agency TAS during the cold war? That way we only know what they want us to know!
Then again, the only difference between the Iron Curtain Communists and the Americans is that the Americans *think* they are free... it's a powerful illusion.
Search doesn't take that many servers. Cuil only had a few hundred machines. It's ads and "personalization" that require all the infrastructure.
Cuil had a few hundred for serving search - building the index was a different matter!
When I get out of bed, the first thing I do is make sure it is properly made...
Likewise, when I take off my shoes, the first thing I do is lace them up...

The insurance premium will be huge.
Can someone explain how this differs from what IBM did in 1990?
