I disagree that this would constitute a 'good' use for RFID. I do not want to have to rely on a particular piece of jewelry or an implant or anything other than my own intent in order to activate my self defence weapon. This might make slightly more sense for LEO or military arms, but for my personal weapon I need simplicity.

The Daily Yomiuri is the Japanese equivalent of the New York Post. Big flashy stories for the masses but mostly sensationalized.
just FYI in case anyone cares, but the "fateful episode" is no danger at all unless you watch on japanese TV.
American TV display at a different scan rate (due to different electrical frequency in US) and will not cause the flashes to strobe at the same frequency.
Now as for the whole show being nauseatingly bad...
It seems that people are forgetting that the phones sold by DoCoMo are all going to be sold in Japan (or never realized that in the first place)
Most commuters in Japan are on trains and/or busses rather than driving. In that environment a game or two is a welcome relief for people shoved into overcrowded subway cars.

it's huge. If you're in Tokyo sometime stop in akihabara. you can buy used cell phones out of big crates for ¥200 a piece. (less than $2US)
