  1. Glamorizing news, /. way on Flying Reptile The Size of A Small Airplane · · Score: 1

The title says "Flying Reptile The Size of A Small Airplane". What's wrong in picking an appropriate and representative headline. The NewZeland Herald title "Flying dinosaur biggest airborne animal" was more apt.

From my understanding, India is a country of Very rich and Very poor. The middle class, if you would, is a newer concept (thanks to the tech boom).

I don't know where you got this impression from. India has a huge middle class population (close to ~300 million). Even before the tech. boom, liberalization etc there existed a large bourgeois population. Middle class families were the one who benefitted the most from tech. boom and liberalization.

  3. Re:Silver medal in Archery at the 1980 olympics? on Ask Unix Co-Creator Rob Pike · · Score: 1
It is a joke. The web page clearly mentions that.
    From the page:http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?RobPike/

"I believe he did appear at least once on Letterman as assistant to Penn and Teller, but he's joking to say he's well-known for that. The comment about archery is also a joke of some sort; Pike is a Canadian citizen who has worked in the U.S. for decades, and both Canada and the U.S. boycotted the 1980 Olympics, so you needn't go looking for the records of that year's Olympics to figure this out".

  4. Re:Libraries are better alternatives on The Indian Info-Rickshaws · · Score: 1

Well I don't have any statisitics to quote. But my personal observation is that most of the Indian villages lack even the one room libraires. Even at places where they are: the book collection is abysmal, library conditions are poor .

Compare a well stacked library at a vilage with internet connected computers (erratic power supply, bandwidth problems, lack of content in local languages etc.) and books come out as a cheap, sustainable and better alternative.

  5. Libraries are better alternatives on The Indian Info-Rickshaws · · Score: 1

Most of these high tech ventures get more media (international) attention since magic word IT is attached, while it is doubtful what benfits these serve and how long these ventures are sustained. Yes technology can better people lives, but in this case techonology is not the solution where the problem lies else where. Most of the Indian villages don't even have a library at all and opening a decent library is far more better and sustainable alternative than running these info rickshaws around, yeah opening an old fashinoed library won't get any media attention though.

Clearcase is a very nice tool. It was originally created by another company, whose name escapes me at the moment, then later purchased by Rational

The original company was "Atria " . Clearcase daemon is still referred as ALBD (Atria Location Broker Daemon)

  7. Variety of Men by C.P.Snow on Einstein Unveiled · · Score: 1, Informative

C.P.Snow's book "Variety of Men" has a good biographical sketch of Einstien. It is different than what one usually gets to read and provides insights about the days when Einstien was not yet known (famous) and also about his later days where he carried his activitism against nuclear wars.

The best piece in this book is the bio sketch of G.H.Hardy
