This reply is tottally off topic and will probably get hit but if you go to Apple.com you will see that the stated reason for Apple opening its own retail stores is so that it can double is market share
Apple is opening retail stores. Here's why:

Apple currently has around 5% market share in personal computers. This means that out of one hundred computer users, five of them use Macs. While that may not sound like a lot, it is actually higher than both BMW's and Mercedes-Benz's share of the automotive market. And it equals 25 million customers around the world using Macs.

But that's not enough for us. We want to convince those other 95 people that Macintosh offers a much simpler, richer and more human-centric computing experience.
    ...[snip]...
Because if only 5 of those remaining 95 people switch to Macs, we'll double our market share and, more importantly, earn the chance to delight another 25 million customers.

    Here we go...

In other tottaly unreleated Apple news the prices on the flat panels are dropping again
Apple Cinema Display (22" flat panel) $2,499.00
Apple Studio Display (17" flat panel) $999.00

    Is KDE free software?

Yes, KDE is free software according to the GNU General Public License. All KDE libraries are available under the LGPL making commercial software development for the KDE desktop possible, but all KDE applications are licensed under the GPL.

KDE uses the Qt C++ crossplatform toolkit, which is also released (since version 2.2) under the GPL.

It is absolutely legal to make KDE and Qt available on CD-ROM free of charge. No runtime fees of any kind are incurred.

    For more info, look here,
The Qt Free Edition (version 2.2 and later) is released under the Open Source license QPL, and GPL. The Qt Free Edition may be freely copied and distributed, put on ftp-sites and CD-ROMs etc. Qt Free Edition is provided with no warranty and no support.

And just in case you think they might change their minds later and try to close it back up and make it nonfree there is this
Should Trolltech ever discontinue the Qt Free Edition for any reason including, but not limited to, a buyout of Trolltech, a merger or bankruptcy, the latest version of the Qt Free Edition will be released under the BSD license.

Furthermore, should Trolltech cease continued development of Qt, as assessed by a majority of the KDE Free Qt Foundation, and not release a new version at least every 12 months, the Foundation has the right to release the Qt Free Edition under the BSD License.

Vivendi Universal's Mercury label paid Clark $1,000 on Feb. 14 after KINK added a song by Kim Richey. Bertelsmann's Windham Hill label, EMI Group's Capitol label and AOL Time Warner's Giant label each paid about the same fee for songs by Janis Ian, Shivaree and Steely Dan, according to the bank. Another document, titled "non-money stuff," shows a list of songs played by KINK and a corresponding list of products or services, including concert tickets and a promise that certain acts might appear later at a station benefit.

Dual ATA100 IDE controller NVIDIA APU (Audio Processing Unit) sound device with a huge feature set, including Dolby Digital encoding for AC3-output. Full networking feature set, including FastEthernet 100/10 Mbit, HomePNA 2.0 (home phone line networking) and SoftModem Six concurrent USB-ports with 2 USB-hubs SteamThru, allowing high bandwidth and guaranteed real time memory access of all devices connected to the MCP, as typically required by video or audio broadcasting from disk, CD, DVD, LAN, WAN, IEEE1394 or when burning a CDROM.

to address part of your question about directx, directly here is a link to the page about the audio processing unit.

Hardware DirectX8 audio processor (the first of its kind) Up to 256 different stereo voices, of which 192 are 2D-voices and 64 are 3D-voices Dolby Digital 5.1 Encoder DSL2-acceleration (Downloadable Sample Version 2) 32 bin mixer, with 8 voice volumes mixed to each bin (to get to 256)

As it appears that this chipset is an outgrowth of the Xbox development I can imagine that integration with directx* will be pretty much a given.

As far as earlier comments about drivers go, this second article mentions that "A motherboard with nForce chipset will be installed with ONE driver"

Obviously this type of chipset won't appeal to everyone, but hey for me it sounds great. No more Nic, audio card, graphics card etc to buy. The only thing they missed was integrating 128 MB or system RAM into the mix..
