Gotta love that it's a rumor site, but according to Valleywag, Greylock Ventures, the guys that just gave them $25 million, actually valued them at $525 million, which is not really that close to the $2 billion that they were rumored to be looking for.
I can't remember the original source that mentioned something like this, but the author of the piece was arguing that to refer to it as "AJAX" you are only referring to things that involved Asynchronous Javascript and XML. With most of the tasks that I've found a use for "AJAX" I've never used XML. Rather, we should just be referring to the general sense of using either XMLHttpRequest/Iframes as "Ajax" to keep things simple for consumers.
you can neuter most cydoor apps using the dummy cd_clint.dll files from here. Using these, the apps will still run but no more ads!
My boss had installed a GRE word prep program and it didn't work after I cleaned up with AdAware (kept saying cd_clint.dll not found or something). I replaced it with this and everything was a-okay!
there's also travelpack.
i actually used them this past weekend. sure, the buses for sunday night got cancelled (not their fault), and my monday morning (7am) bus got stranded 30 mins outside of nyc for an hour (got picked up by the 8am bus), but you can't beat a round-trip for $20. i had my own seat both ways and it was about 4 hours each way.
i work for the help desk for my edu. Over the summer, we saw a lot of the gateway desktop models that had a bad motherboard. I spent many hours on the phone with one of the techs one time and we ended up doing some troubleshooting over the phone. he asked me to look at the board itself, check connections, yada yada. afterwards, he then asked me to look at the capacitors. I did, and noted that the criss-cross tops were blown and bulging upwards. He assured me that this was the problem and that it was well-documented with gateway.
great, so i can pick up a new gateway with a cdr and cd-ripping software, all the while looking around the store for music to remember to go home and download so i can burn it later! awesome!
the more potent green house gases, like methane, nitrogen compounds, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's)? each of these does exist in the atmosphere in smaller quantities than those of CO2, but they have strong heat-absorbing properties, which may make them a greater threat than CO2. furthermore, they are complementary, in that they each tend to trap a different spectra of thermal radiation.
studies show that in the early 80's a very large rise of these gasses was detected in the atmosphere, and their output has hardly slowed either.
perhaps the whole situation isn't as bad as it seems. having read the article, one would realize that the author only hypothesizes on whether or not the network is secure. brilliant could have implemented all the things that he questioned as insecure. this is not a review of their technology, but rather a blatant guess at how their technology will work.
power stations like this aren't necessarily a good thing. yes, it sounds good at first, but the more you think about it, the less sense it makes. example: everybody immediately thinks that hybrid vehicles will greatly reduce C0_2 emmisions. fact: when these cars don't run on gasoline, they run on electricity, usually produced from a C0_2 pumping coal power plant. however, from what i understand, some of these vehicles use energy from braking and what not to help refill the batteries, so yes, these cars may lead to a decrease in C0_2 emmisions, but probably not a significant one.
something like this will destroy coastlines. how much research are they doing into the environment of the area? lots of animals return to their conception grounds to mate, usually a beach. i'd hope they wouldn't build in these areas, but i seriously doubt they would close down a public (ie, money making) beach to build one of these.
my school (wm.edu) had the same problem. aol (and some other isp's) blacklisted us last year for running an open relay. now, we switched over to secure login and everything is great! why doesn't he just use secure login? or what about running a secure proxy or even just let them use webmail?
Naess has made 8 major points about man in the environment and how to resolve it:
the well-being of humans and non-humans have value
the richness/diversity of things contribute to the value of the well-being of all things
humans have no right to reduce diversity of any species (plant or animal) directly or indirectly except for vital needs
the flourishing of human life and culture necessitates a decrease in human population which leads to smaller communities and would tend to lead to a better ecology
there is already too much human interference within the non-human world
policies therefore must be changed
the ideological change is to appreciate life quality over standard of living
if you agree to the above, you are obligated to implement the necessary changes
although i haven't read this book, if he doesn't cover these 8 things, it may be considered incomplete by all followers of Naess.
i believe it was Taylor that argued that there are four main parts to his life-centered ideology:
human and nonhuman beings are equal
the interconnectedness of the ecosystem (that is to say, that the ecosystem is way more complex (not complicated) than any being could imagine)
the teleology of each organism (each individual organism has its own intrinisic value)
therefore, humans have no superiority
following taylor's (or just about any other ecological philosopher's) example, humans are once again overstepping their boundaries. this unfortunately, leads to no good.
hell, if you wanted to take a metaphysical standpoint (as i understand 85%+ of the world's population is religios), God meant for humans to be stewards of his Earth. Basically, he wanted us simply to take care of the animals. How is this 'taking care' of them in any moral sense?
this sounds like a great way to spread virii!!
just think, one user in new york city gets a single virus (or writes one), and next thing you know, it'll be on the news that half of new york's business folk lost all their data on their handhelds and pc's (once they sync'ed it) b/c of a new virus!
hah!
yea.. and isn't VIA in the process of getting sued by Intel for using a chipset that don't have the license for?
VIA believes because they own a large portion of a company that has the rights from Intel, that they, too, can benefit from these rights. This really isn't the case though according to Intel's lawyers.
I really don't wanna use a chipset that will be illegal in a few months, and thus, lose all support. do you?
lost the url's for these, but prolly from anandtech.com
Pardon me, but doesn't this technology destroy my right (assuming this is a right) to a single, personal-use, backup copy?
After I purchase a cd, I typically rip it to the
MP3 format so that I may listen to it on my machine. I much prefer this method than having to constantly switch cd's in the drive. This, as far as I have seen, constitutes fair use and is not illegal. These rip-proof cd's would take away this possibility. Are there any laws that could stop this technology from coming into use since I am not able to make my legal backup copy?

Under the table: Greylock thinks Facebook's worth $525 million

if given the oppurtunity, what would you do to change the scene in order to make it more secure? sftp instead of ftp?
do you have any advice for those who continue to operate 'top sites' or anything you want to say to them?
